tennis greats by eras

Suzanne Lenglen + Helen Wills Moody

Helen Wills Moody + Helen Jacobs

Maureen Connolly + Athea Gibson

Margaret Smith Court + Maria Bueno

Margaret Smith Court + Billy Jean King

Chris Everet + Martina Navratilova

Steffi Graf + Monica Seles

Martina Hingis (dominant player of this period)

Serena Williams + Venus Williams + Justin Henin

who will be the dominant players of this era?
we will watch and find out.

simply looking at the grand slam tournament winners gives a pretty clear picture.

Re: tennis greats by eras

Hingis was pretty dominant for 2000 and 2001, she was still close to winning slams and winning alot of tournaments.

Good luck to the Aussie and Balkan girls!

I happen to agree with you, but history is going to, unfarily, swamp Hingis. You can't be a dominant player in the slams for ONE year, and make it into the history book fifty year out.

I now go against my previous post. You can't ignore JCap and Lindsay Davenport in this period, despite they're (relative) lack of slam success.

And Justine Henin, unfairly, will go the way of Evonne Goolagong and Maria Bueno. Especially if Venus wins anothe slam. Great player, but swamped by the reputations of greater players. Venus will get pub because she's the other half of the 'Williams Sisters'. She'll never be truly compared to Henin straight up as a singles players. (Three Olympic Gold medals to one will figure into it too.)

Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.

Re: tennis greats by eras

Justine Henin and Venus Williams did not dominate 1999-2009. Infact, no one did as a whole. I think if you want to go from 99 to 09, you have to seperate these years into at least 4 eras. The first, 09-01, was dominated by Venus Williams, Jennifer Capriati and Lindsay Davenport. The second, 02-04, was dominated by Serena Williams. The third, 05-07 was dominated by Justine Henin and the fourth, 08 - Present is being dominated by Venus and Serena Williams, but mostly Serena Williams.

serena, jankovic, venus, na, hsieh, date-krumm, jovanovski
makarova, diatchenko, halep, goerges and kvitova

The next era :

Until the top players find their form the bit about "next greats" can't really be answered. Seems like after the FO last year half the top 10 went limp.

Re: tennis greats by eras

Davenport was just as domimant as Hingis in 98-99 (arguably more so) and continued to be one of the elite in 00-01, 04-05. I would put her down in both periods, but at the very least in the late 90's one.

and no, simply looking at the grand slam winners is not an accurate way to do this.
