Roof a possibility for the US Open
Associated Press
New York, September 02

The US Open could follow the lead of the Australian Open and install a retractable roof over its main court, the tournament's chief executive said after Sunday's schedule was all but washed out. "We love that retractable roof," Arlen Kantarian said after a day of downpours at the Grand Slam event at Flushing Meadows.

"We have looked at it... no promises here but we do love that roof. You know, it is something that can be looked at not just for Arthur Ashe stadium court but also for Grandstand court and Louis Armstrong (court). That would give us three arenas that we could use for a lot more things. Certainly it is something down the road that we have never ruled out."

Venus Williams has a strategy for watching tennis on television. She watches the action, but doesn't listen to the commentary. "Too much talk for me, sometimes," she said. "I don't keep it too loud. That's for sure."

Seventh-seeded Kim Clijsters got off to a terrible start against Vera Zvonareva of Russia on Saturday, losing the first set 1-6. She came back, however, to salvage the match by winning the final two sets 7-5 6-4. "I'll have to play better if I want to win," she said. "Even if it's not there in the beginning, my rhythm wasn't there at all. I kept fighting and it turned around. You have to keep trying, keep trying.”

Andre Agassi's infant son, Jaden, has been a regular at the US Open with his mother, retired Grand Slam champion Steffi Graf. And Agassi likes to tease Pete Sampras, whose wife, actress Brigette Wilson-Sampras, is expecting the couple's first child. "I, for sure, see Jaden beating up on his kid a little bit, speaking on the tennis court," Agassi said. "If it's a little girl, I have a hundred bucks that says she has a crush on Jaden."

um, how do they plan to put a roof on Ashe?! The stadium is so huge that I think they'd save more money building another one.
