Is Azarenka good enough to challenge Serena?

Serena is stilllllll No 1 despite having played only 15 tournaments in the past year. To compare, Safina has played 19...i reckon Azarenka has the talent to actually challenge her. Someone needs to...got bit about it on blog this week if you fancy read...link is on my signature...

clijsters coming back should help but we need a roger-rafe-esque rivalry to really get people interested again.

Re: Is Azarenka good enough to challenge Serena?

watch this turn into a drama fest thread

anyway, don't know if your talking in terms of rankings or match

rankings - hopefully not , i mean Azarenka #1 in the next couple of years?

match - she needs to play almost her best tennis ever to be able to do it (AO 09), besides she needs goatrena to not show up on court or else ...

No LOL
Two of the four things to ever challenge Serena, Venus and injury, are still her main threats. One is new (old age) and one is no longer a threat (Henin)

LOL! Is this a joke? Maybe after Serena turns 30, "Vika" will have a chance.

Challenge Serena for what?

We already saw that, whilst ill, she can challenge Serena in a Grand Slam.

As far as challenging her for the no.1 ranking, obviously not right now.

Re: Is Azarenka good enough to challenge Serena?

Your post implies that Azarenka will contend for the #1 spot...erm, not right now she won't.

If you're talking about in a match, we all know Azarenka gave Serena a tough challenge in Melbourne before she had to retire. So she obviously can challenge Serena, but beating her is another thing that is harder to predict...

She can give a Serena a match, at least for a set..but for no.1? Not yet, a year or two away.

Backgammon maybe?

Seriously, in the last couple of rounds of a Slam I think Venus is the only player who can possibly beat Serena right now. But in non-Slam/Miami events, and also in the early rounds of Slams, Serena is often quite beatable. In these situations yes, Azarenka has a shot at beating Serena, as do numerous other players. The thing that ironically works against Azarenka is that as her ranking rises it ensures that the only time she will face Serena will be in the later rounds of a tournament. And of course beating Serena in the later rounds of a tournament, particularly a Slam, is much more difficult than in the early rounds.

Re: Is Azarenka good enough to challenge Serena?

well, she showed that she was in a match.

now consistently i don't think, she just got into the top 10, it will take her some more time to consistently challenge the number player.

she has some weapons, let's see if she can use them well enough to beat the top regularly.

not yet.

to new beginnings.

Re: Is Azarenka good enough to challenge Serena?

She did for a set, although, Serena was playing some of career worst tennis until the match with Kuznetsova

The only times I've seen her play worse was Zurich and YEC 2007 and Wimbledon 2005 - AO 06.

I expect she will be able to beat Serena at some point...not sure if they will become the Nadal-Federer of the women's tour though.

She has a challenge already and that person is Venus. What the heck are you talking about.
