Top ten performers of 2009 (up to Charleston/Stuttgart/Rome/Madrid).

On how I rank:
- Grand slam performance
- # of wins over top 10 (level of other wins taken into account as well)
- W/L percentage
- consistency (QF/SF+)
- the tier/slam levels that the player has done well at
- I include only MD & Fed Cup match wins/losses, no qualifying

I'm not saying these ranks are 100% accurate. I'd say if you think #3 could be #4 and vice versa if it's really close, then I'm doing what I'm trying to do correctly. It shouldn't ever be more than +/- 1.

Re: Top ten performers of 2009 (up to Indian Wells).

As always, I'm open to changing my rankings. Vera would be #2 if she had more top ten wins; Venus would be #2 if she had a better AO showing; Elena is #2 because of the great stretch she went on; Amelie is so high due to her amount of top ten wins and two solid runs + decent AO showing.

If Ana hadn't made the final of IW, Vesnina would have been #10. Kanepi and Vesnina are the two boiling under at the moment.

Let the fun begin.

Has Vera really only beat one top ten player this year? How impressive.

Yay, glad you're back

I think Ana should go above Virginie though. Despite not having the bigger wins, IW final is still bigger than Dubai final. Ana has an extra QF and Virginie has two 1R exits.

But it's an accurate list either way.

Vera has also beaten 5 top 20 players including two ranked at 11, one being your fave Azarenka. Only Serena Williams has as many total top 20 wins as Vera does, six.

Additionally, and this is what I find most impressive, every single one of Vera's 18 wins has been in straight sets aside from her match against Bartoli where Bartoli waived the white flag in the middle of the 1st set, understandable considering Marion's record against Vera. Simply, Vera is on cruise control and beating virtually everyone she faces pretty effortlessly. How impressive? Damn impressive, I'd say.

It is close between Ana and Virginie. I think Virginie gets the edge because while Dubai isn't as big a tournament as Indian Wells, Virginie's run to the final was a hell of a lot more impressive (two top 5 wins, and both inform ones at that) than was Ana's.
