Are the WS going to lose ranking points for skipping IW this year ?

I'm still not very familiar with the new rankings. All I know is that roughly points are doubled form last year. I'm thinking most players will improve their rankings. WS will stay put. Am I right?

They get a 0 pointer, and it counts as one of their 16 best tournaments. Same with Sharapova, Strebotnik, Petrova and anyone else who qualified for direct entry into the tournament but did not play.

They will get a zero which will be included in their best 16 results as this event is mandatory. But seeing as though they rarely play over 15 events, it won't really effect them.

Kuznetsova

... for some reason.

Re: Are the WS going to lose ranking points for skipping IW this year ?

no, noone will gain points unless they do better than they did last year... aka Dementieva/ Jankovic ended up losing ground.....

All the points from last year were already doubled since they didnt play last year its really not affecting them.

Venus Ebony Starr

Serena Williams

Sharapova

Hantuchova

Technically, Williams sisters don't lose ranking points, but any Indian Wells semi/final player gets mega-points that can pull ahead of them.

Think of it like this: Safina wins IW she gets +1000 points, non-playing Serena gets 0. If Serena had played IW and won, she gets +1000 and Safina as runner-up only +750. Just that much harder for Safina to catch her if Serena had played this premier 1000 tournie.

If Serena had 16 tournaments, the 0 would replace the tournament that she gained the least points in.
She doesnt play 16, neither does Venus or Sharapova. Thus, unaffected

Since IW is one of the 4 mandatory tournaments and all the other players are playing here, of course it affects the WS More than in previous years.

Not as much as you wish and think. The are presently in the top 5 with several 0s therefore if they do well in the other remaining tournaments it will be no "biggie". Short term Safina and Vera Z benefit the most but that still won't have much effect if the Sisters continue to play well for the rest of the year.

In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the SILENCE OF OUR FRIENDS. MLK

Problem is that's a big 'if,' due to their lack of consistency. Less margin of error in future tournies, but that's their choice.

No it doesn't

They never played before so they don't lose points
And they don't play 16 tournaments a year so the 0 pointer replace another 0 in their 16 best results

WS rules the WTA

Anastasia Myskina

Radwanska - S. Williams - V. Williams - Kerber

How do you know how much I "think and wish" that it affects them?

You have absolutely no clue how the rankings work, right?
It doesn't matter if the WS play 16 events or more or less this year. And the crap that they don't have anything to defend from last year is totally irrelevant as well. Fact is that IW is mandatory now (it wasn't before) and worth more points than last year. Go and check and read the rulebook and then we can talk again, ignorant WS-fanboy
