Venus vs Serena

Let's break it down.

1st Serve - Venus can generate more racket head speed, but Serena has a more reliable, and controllable, first serve.

2nd Serve - No contest. Venus has a second serve only Hingis could be proud of. She basically counts on her foot speed to counter-act this.

Groundstrokes. It's not what they are, it's what they do. Serena is constantly moving forward. So she has to play a lot of balls that are actually landing behind her. That's about the only opportunity to attack Serena you get, and you have to put the ball on the baseline with the previous shot. When she running on the forehand side, there's no angle she won't try the hooking crosscourt passing shot from. She's using a backhand slice more, but the shot is poorly disguised. Mostly its just keeping the ball down so when Serena gets to net, she has an easy volley.

Venus plays a much more side to side game than does Serena. And she puts more of a premium on keeping her errors down. Often, Venus will block back a high paced shot. As often as not, the ball lands on a sideline or the baseline anyway, but these are basically defensive shots. Shots Venus uses because she doesn't have time to set up. But it does mean her opponent is constantly trying to make difficult shots. And of course, Venus attacks at the first short or weak ball.

Truth is, its much easier to take control of a point from Venus than it is to take control from Serena. Venus just runs back and forth til she gets control back. Serena fights over it. Put differently; Venus knows how to make the match very, very difficult for anyone she plays. Serena attacks them.

Well, so much for breaking down their games. But it isn't the shots that define them, it's the style.

I like the side to side game better, that's how I play too.

Pas de Quatre: Swan Lake, Giselle, The Nutcracker, Coppélia
Divas: Lenglen, Seles, Sharapova

there's a reason why most players like to play Venus better ... they feel they have a better chance right now against Venus than against Serena for the reasons you pointed out Volcana! Serena attacks all the time! She's restless!!! She doesn't like to play rallies unlike her sister Venus!

Good analysis Volcana!!!

Serve: Serena is much more versatile on her serve than Venus. This creates a guessing game with her opponents as to what serve to look for. Serena serves slower to allow those incredible slices and spins which creates acute angles. Serving is the major difference between the Sisters.

Groundstrokes: Backhands comparable. Forehands; Serena's is more versatile and superior. She can hit it flatter, with topspin and under more control. Serena now hits as good angles as there is in the WTA.

Net Play/volleys: Venus is superior by far. Actually Venus probably wins more points at net than anyone, especially the top ten.

Venus depends less on her serve than Serena. Serena depends on her serve more than any player other than Davenport. while Venus depends more on her court savvy. Venus may be the most cerebral player on tour today. That is why you can never count her out.

Venus will go on defense alot more than Serena. Especially when her offense is not effective. Serena could learn from Venus in this regard.

Style of play. They play similar games. Venus is more patient while Serena is more agressive. Venus relies more on dissecting an opponent's game while Serena prefers to make opponents adjust to her game. Serena can execute any shot that Venus can with consistency. Venus cannot do the same. But Venus out thinks Serena out there and is second to none when it comes to scratching and fighting for every point. Venus will defeat handily opponents Serena on a given day might lose to. But Serena has the attributes to defeat Venus most of the time.

Beat'em down Ms Williams, beat'em down!

Françoise Abanda definitely a future #1 --- Taylor Townsend devastation on the march
Venus and Serena ferocious grannies --- Kimiko Date Krumm great granny still doing her thing.

Good effort guys in attempting to differentiate Venus's game from Serena's. Beyond the obvious differences in their serves, on any given day, everything that has been said here about Venus can be seen in a Serena's match and vice versa. The attack, the aggression, the defense, the top spin to slow the pace a little, the sharp angle crosscourt and down-the-line, the pull left and right, ...

I think they just adapt differently to different opponents, but the tools are the same. The error count can be low or it can be high; again depending on the opponent. I have to agree Venus can be more patient. Also, Serena is more expressive on the court, to the delight of tons of expectators. That's all.

"Some shots I will hit hard but not every ball. I'm not just using my power." - Serena Williams, Oct/2002

compared to Serena, Venus deserves to be No.2.
