oldschool players are dominating the tour.

Elena
Mauresmo
Serena
Venus
All won titles this year. The oldschool is beating the crap out of the youth. I like it. If these young guns want to be great champs, they really need to beat some of the best players of the past 10 years.

Re: oldschool players are dominating the tour.

Well, this is great for everyone and that's the normal way.
These girls wins then the young players start to win once in a while and finally they are winning everything.

The fact that Davenport, Hingis, Clisjers, Henin and yes, Myskina all retired "early" led to a bunch of players unprepared to be the stars of the Tour and main contenders.

Re: oldschool players are dominating the tour.

I just started a thread similar to this a few days ago. I for one love it. I dont really care for any of these young future stars. Seriosuly I need to remove Cornet from my signature. Ill be honest and say the only two players I like of the much younger generation are Cibulkova and Timea B. although her rankin has fallen considerably. heres to hoping that old school tennis can dominate for another 2 years, please let it be! =P

LUCIE SAFAROVA!!

Madison Brengle!!
Tsvetana Pironkova, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, Lauren Davis, Petra Kvitova, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Timea Bacsinszky, Madison Keys, Kaia Kanepi, Klara Zakopalova, Agnieszka Radwanska

Elena Dementieva - Always my number 1 2012 FITD Olympic Gold Medal Champion!

Re: oldschool players are dominating the tour.

I agree. The Williams could mop up the slams for the next couple of years ahead if they want. And a few players who 'retired' early could make a ton of dosh if they brushed off their rackets. Imagine if Capriati and Pierce hadn't been so injured and if Lindsay hadn't had babies - they'd still be up there too. And yes, I think it's great seeing Amelie and the Williams win. True big stars, not flash in the pans.

Monica Seles Superstar. Her fans never forget.

Players I root for now: Heather, Laura, Lucie, Marion, Serena, Simona, Svetlana, Venus, Vika. And Caroline.
Doubles and Mixed Doubles are fun and underrated.

The Dokic resurgance this year too, beating 3 top 20 players in a slam...not quite the resurgance of the players you mention but still noteworthy! looks like the game hasnt moved past her

Good luck to the Aussie and Balkan girls!

It's nice to see major comebacks and I like what I'm seeing. Mauresmo back on track. The Williams sisters back in top five. That's tennis!

Re: oldschool players are dominating the tour.

What people expect when Sharapova is still out and Ivanovic in slump?

But also all best players of "middle" generation (except Zvonareva) plays pretty worse than last season (Jankovic, Safina, Kuznetsova).

Of course it's nice to see again sisters at their best, or Mauresmo, Dokic... to play like in old good days It's not impossible if Hantuchova, Petrova, Schnyder will rejoin to them with good form also.

and I'm not even fan of Ana Ivanovic... just an objective observer who realize how perfect she is

AMAZING BELGRADE MIRACLE: In just three years (2008-2011) 5 different players born in same city reach world #1 in rankings and several GS titles and finals (WTA singles: Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic, ATP singles: Novak Djokovic, ATP doubles: Nenad Zimonjic and Daniel Nestor... with notable performances of Bojana Jovanovski, Janko Tipsarevic and Viktor Troicki which is also all three born in Belgrade)

These players who were top players in the late 1990's had to play against a much stronger top ten then by todays standards.....its only natural that former top ten players like Mauresmo start beating some of the imposters

Good luck to the Aussie and Balkan girls!

even though i have lots of young players as favs i agree with this 100%

if Capriati , Kim etc... feel like returning to the tour this is the right moment to do so, hopefully Hingis will be back since her ban ends this year but i doubt it )

Dominika Cibulkova

Re: oldschool players are dominating the tour.

I think it's nice that a lot of fans have put these petty squabbles aside about whose fav is better than whose and we're genuinely happy that these old school players are playing so well. Maybe it's because we have gotten used to their personalities and struggles and can relate more to them. Long may it continue.

RIP Elena Baltacha, thank you for dedicating your life to a sport we all love. You'll be missed but never forgotten.

Re: oldschool players are dominating the tour.

I agree it's good to see - especially Amelie's win in Paris with her athletic ability and great volleys.

You can't beat experience.

I know I've said it before and I'll say it again - I am extremely concerned with the lack of variety of the up and coming young players - they all play the same way. The likes of Wozniacki, Vaidisova, Cornet, Klebenova, Safina etc etc don't excite me at all.

I think the Aussie final was a great illustration of the gulf.

Serena has a technically excellent serve, with different types of slice and topspin on both courts, and a technically excellent and strong 2nd serve.

Serena also has a brilliant return of serve, she hardly ever misses a 2nd serve return to put the pressure on or hit winners.

Safina has an extremely shaky 1st and 2nd serve especially when she gets nervous, so it was easy to see why Serena was always going to win that match easily.

The up and coming players have to improve their technique and mental game if they want to stay at the top and be remembered by fans for years to come.
