When we speak of best of this generation

What year do you think this generation started? I say it started in 97 with the rise of Hingis to the top ranking. Steffi was the last player from her generation to win a slam.

Can another generation start before the descent of the players from the previous generation? In my mind this generation doesn't end until Venus and Serena are no longer winning slams. 97-?

your thoughts..

"Hatred is the coward's revenge for being intimidated" - George Bernard Shaw

"And for the best of the teen-agers who followed her, and who occasionally referred to her as over the hill, Graf had a ready answer: against top-ranked Martina Hingis, Graf wound up 7-2. Graf's stirring 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 throttling of Hingis at the French Open final this June was perhaps the most emphatic parting shot the game has ever seen. "

I agree. This would mean the younger girls like Maria, Ana, Jelena are all part of this generation, and their legacy would need to be qualified as such.

Re: When we speak of best of this generation

Well I also think that Mauresmo is part of the Venus, Serena, Hingis, Kournikova generation too, she just peaked a lot later. So I think all three of those players need to retire before you can close the book on that "generation" of players. I also think that it's interesting that Venus and Serena have gone toe to toe with the top players over four generations really. They started at the tail end of the previous generation and proved they could compete with the very best right out the gate (Graf, Seles, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, Conchita Martinez, Mary Pierce), their own generation (Hingis, Kournikova, Davenport, Mauresmo), the next immediate generation (Henin, Clijsters, Myskina, Kuznetsova, Dementieva, Sharapova) and this current generation Ivanovic, Jankovic, Vaidisova, Safina.

Never chase love, affection or attention. If it isn't given to you freely by another person, then it isn't worth having.
