Guarantees again forbidden?

Hi folks,

as far as I know the Wta's code of conduct - updated as of January 31, 2009 - banned again the guarantees, which allow tournaments to secure the presence of stars by paying large sums in advance.

"No Player or Player Support Team Member shall accept, and no Tournament Support Personnel shall offer, give or pay, money or anything of value from any source, directly or indirectly, to influence or guarantee a player’s appearance in any Tournament, other than prize money and permitted amateur expenses, unless authorized by the WTA...Violation of the above, including failure to cooperate with the investigation, shall subject the Player and/or the Tournament to an automatic fine of $50,000 plus the amount or value of such payment and may result in up to three (3) months’ suspension from play on the Tour for the player and loss of Player Commitment or membership for the Tournament." (exerpt from wta' rules recently updated as of January 31)

what is your point of view about the guarantees ?

Re: Guarantees again forbidden?

You forgot to bold the most important part: unless authorized by the WTA.

Do u actually think Wta is going to authorize any player to get fees?

Re: Guarantees again forbidden?

I don't know much about the history of guarantees. Are they commonly used? How much money are we talking about? Why would the WTA ever approve an appearance fee? Don't players get compensation even if lose in the first round, so isn't that appearance money?

Sounds like the WTA figured out a way to get their cut.
