Serena Distancing Herself From The Pack?

I did not see the Serena-Ana match, but from what I read in the result thread, I took away a few things.

First, Serena impressed everybody by her level of play today.
Second, Ana got rave review from all posters, WS fans and non-WS fans alike.

Yet, Ana lost in straight sets.

What does this mean?
To me, it means that Serena level of play is so high now, that merely standing up to her
and avoiding humiliation is not only great cause for satisfaction,
but also bestows on the opponent a sense accomplishment and optimism for the future.

Again, this is based on what I read, I did not see match.
Hence the question mark in the thread title.

It was very good...if she continues like this she will but so far this form has been for a relatively short period....

There was also this final observation at the end of the match on TennisEarth.com Live comment section of the match.

Quote:
Serena Williams reeled off 5 games in a row to set up a semifinal showdown with sister Venus at the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships 2009.. The French Open champion played some of the best tennis of her life but was unable to get past the ten time grand slam champion , Super Serena...

Re: Serena Distancing Herself From The Pack?

it says to me that Ana shockingly played good tennis considering her form lately but her tennis is nowhere near Serena/ or any of the other greats of this early century......... The thing you have to remember about Ana, is while she had a good couple years... her record against Venus/ Serena/ Henin/ Mauresmo/ Davenport was/ is still appalling.

Mauresmo = 6-2
Venus = 5-1
Davenport= 1-0
Henin = 4-0
Serena = 2-0

Shes a total 3-18 against the "champions" and ladies that made 1999-2003 the era that is was. She cant beat them, her "best" tennis just isnt good enough.

Or maybe its just a mental thing....?

Yeah!
I hate when they meet before the final. However, I do not usually measure Serena level of play by how she does against Venus.

Although I usually favor Venus in their H2H, this is one time I will stay neutral.
Either way, I will be fine.

why? they've only been playing good tennis against each other consistantly in the past year..... and its been pretty even... I would never use how Venus plays against Serena or how Serena plays against Venus as a measure of their level

Re: Serena Distancing Herself From The Pack?

I think it was a very good match, really entertaining.. what impressed me most about Serena was her amazing return of serve. There has been some time that I had no seen her hitting so many return winners out of good serves. She was hitting them over 150 km/h. It was just scary. Serena played really well, she had tons of winners and very few UEs.

Ana played the best match she has played this year, going toe to toe with Serena for most of the match, including some return winners of her own. She used her net play wisely and had some vintage forehand winners. But she still has some way to go to be back to her FO 2008 form. There were still ugly UEs and double faults in a row to lose service games. She can and hopefully will improve.

Serena is definitely the best player around right now and I really hope she can keep and give more credibility to the number 1 ranking.

Re: Serena Distancing Herself From The Pack?

I think people were giving Ana 'rave reviews' because she hasn't played at this level for so long. If this match happened 1 year ago and it ended in the same result, people would be saying that Ana didn't play that well. I'm just happy that Serena is playing like a number 1 player and that Ana seems to be back to some kind of form. If today was Ivanovic low in confidence, think how good she can be when high on confidence

What match did you watch?

after holding at 0-2 0-30 down! Ana was oozing with confidence!

I mean low in confidence in terms of match wins. but come to think of it, she must have been high in confidence after the French Open and looked what happened after that....

Re: Serena Distancing Herself From The Pack?

Ana plays better when there's no pressure on her. But Ana did play well during all the break points on her own serve. Her forehand was still shaky, but it was improved since AO. Also her yippy serve has improved. I have to see how Ana will handle the pressure when the FO comes around. It will totally test her. If Ana does really well, then she has really improved. Time will tell.

As for Serena, her game right now is similar to early season of 2003. She was playing some of her best tennis around that time. Serena's returns were devastating! I mean, seriously who else can hit returns like that vs. a pretty good server in Ivanovic. Serena was really aggressive with her returns. Overall, this match was great!
