New career high for Galina who reached the 2nd rd at Pattaya $220K. She fall to n°35 two handed both sides Peng giving a strong resistance in the 1rst set losing 7/6 before giving up in the 2nd.
Another step for Edina who’s reaching the TOP 70. Last week, she reached the QF at Cali $50K. As 2nd seed, she could expect a better ride at Cali but she fall to promising 18 y.o talent n°236 Hercog.
Great rise for Lucie who’s cracking the top 100 for the 1rst time. She, first, revealed her skill with double (reaching the Top 50) which seems to help her for single. Her powerful double handed both side groundstrokes creates damages the 2 past weeks on the ITF circuit. 1rst, she captured $25K Belfort title beating 2nd seed/n°144 Manasieva in final. Then, she flew to the States and won a much bigger ITF at Midland $75K beating 4th seed/n°112 Foretz en route and former back from injury Top 20/current n°303 Daniilidou in final. It’s time now for Lucie to show her improve on the main draw tour...
Good for Lauren who started the season around 220. She’s already up around 50 spots after reaching her 2nd final on the ITF circuit at Rancho Mirage $25K. Her opponent in final was too strong for her as former n°32/ current n°353 Vakulenko is forced to play on the ITF to rise up her ranking.
Another Russian teen is on the way to the Top 100. Vitalia finished n°262 at the year ending ranking. What a jump! Las week, she compete for the 1rst time on the WTA Tour with pretty good success reaching the 2nd rd as a qualifier at Pattaya $220K. Losing to back in form and eventual runner up n°126 Mirza was a goos experience for the future.
FASTER MOVEMENTS IN THE TOP 10, 20, 50, 100, 150 and 200:
Amelie MAURESMO n°19 (+5):
What a great moment for Amelie, former n°1, who’s been capturing her 25th title! She had to wait 2 years to live once again that feeling of winning a tournament (last time was at Antwerp in 2007). It couldn’t be better for her to make it in France, in front of her home crowd who has always supported her. It seems that winter hard work with her new coch is starting to pay. As she said, she’s back on track, and even if she won’t play as much as needed considering she’s 29 y.o, to pretend to the 1rst place in the world ranking, she can use that victory to boost her 2009 season. At Paris $700K, she took the best over 3 Top 10 dropping only 2 games against 4th seed/n°10 Agnieszka Radwanska, then she beat 2nd seed/n°3 Jankovic and in form 3rd seed/n°4 Dementieva in a high quality final.
Magdalena RYBARIKOVA n°47 (+4):
Magdalena is back in the Top 50 and reached her ever best ranking at n°47 after equalling her best performance on the WTA as Semi finalist at Pattaya $220K. She ousted 2nd seed/n°12 teen Wozniacki en route before falling to back in form Indian star n°126 Mirza.
Sania MIRZA n°87 (+39):
Former n°27 Sania is back in form on the tour! Sadly, the Indian talent suffered from wrist injury early in 2008 and stopped playing tennis on the tour for many months. She fall out of the Top 100 at the end of 2008, but everything is ok now…Last week, she found back the joy of victory reaching the final at Pattaya $220K upsetting 6th seed/n°41 and 8th seed/n°51 Rybarikova en route before losing to in form Top seed/n°5 Zvonareva, not before giving a strong fight in the 1rst set (lost 5/7)
Emilie LOIT n°105 (+29):
At a different level but a little bit like her compatriot Amélie, Emilie had a nightmarish season in 2008 falling 11 times in tournaments 1rst rd. Emilie had successful years…from 2001 to 2007 finishing in the Top 100 with a peak at n°29. But Emilie suffered from a love affair broken with her former coach ..and couldn’t find motivation to play on the tour…The Australian tour was on the same bad way as last year…but she woke up at the $700K Open Gaz de France reaching the QF as a qualifier. In the qualies she ousted compatriot 2nd seed/n°105 Pin. She kept improving her timing in the main draw beating respectively n°71 Vaidisova and in form n°23 Kanepi before falling to Top seed/n°1 Serena Williams. Hope this tournament will help her to regain confidence and reconsider her retirement.
