US Open 2002 - Title hopefuls through the 3rd round

Code:
Serena d Morariu 6-2 6-3
Serena d Safina 6-0 6-1
Serena d Dechy 6-1 6-1

Venus d Lucic 6-0 6-0
Venus d Molik 6-1 6-2
Venus d Mueller 6-1 6-2

The top two seeds are dominant

*********************************

Capriati d Mattek 6-0 6-0
Capriati d Pisnik 6-2 6-4
Capriati v Shaughnessy

Davenport d Dyrberg 6-2 6-1
Davenport d Mandula 6-4 6-2
Davenport d Bartoli 6-3 6-1

Seeds #4 and #4 are having the
results you'd expect over players
Not in the top fifteen.

*********************************

Seles d Gubacsi 6-3 6-3
Seles d Schwartz 1-6 7-6 6-2
Seles d Cho 6-1 5-7 6-3

Seles fans have to be a bit concerned.
Two straight three setters over non-seeded
opposition. The fight is there. The
level of play is not.

Clijsters d Granados 6-1 6-0
Clijsters d Washington 6-1 7-6
Clijsters d Zvonareva 1-6 7-5 6-4

Clijsters has lost 22 games her last two
matches. That's a lot when facing less-
than-stellar opposition.

Henin d Reeves 6-1 6-2
Henin d Black 6-3 6-2
Henin d Bielik 7-6 6-1

7-6 set vs Bielik is a hiccup, but basically
she's totally on track.

Hingis d Irvin 6-3 5-7 6-4
Hingis d An.S-Z 6-4 6-2
Hingis V Coetzer

She's not going to win the tournament.
But if she makes the quarters in THIS
physical condition, she's still knows more
about building points than anyone in the game.
Because physically, she's barely a top 50 player
out there.

Mauresmo d Benesova 6-3 6-2
Mauresmo d T-Valero 7-6 6-2
Mauresmo d Schnyder 6-1 6-4

Hantuchov d Pratt 6-2 6-1
Hantuchov d Razzano 6-3 6-2
Hantuchov d Majoli 6-3 6-1

Farina-Elia d Rippner 6-1 6-4
Farina-Elia d Callens 6-2 6-2
Farina-Elia d Kuznetsova 6-3 6-2

Rubin d Craybas 6-1 6-3
Rubin d Barna 6-4 6-1
Rubin d Raymond 7-6 6-4

Mauresmo, Hantuchova, Farina-Elia
and Rubin are all playing well, and
disposing of their opposition easily.
Of course, in the 4th round, they play
on the big girls playground. At this
writing, Rubin, Mauresmo and Hingis have
third round matches to play.

No real reason for concern or surprise - Monica had not played a match since Stanford coming into this tournament. The main point is that she had gotten this far after some tough matches. Incidentally, as a Venus fan you ought to be aware that Barbara Schwartz is not to be underestimated even though she is not seeded.

Monica will most likely play Martina in the next round. She is not the favourite in this match with their head to head and on current form so there is no real burden of expectation here either. So she's got nothing to lose really.

One three set match was nothing, especially given the conditions that day.

The thing about the Cho match was, Monica lost her concentration. Monica doesn't lose her concentration. Not for SEVEN straight games against not-top-thirty opposition. She also wasn't going for the lines much at all.

Mauresmo and Chanda won their third rounds. Chanda came from 1-5 down in the first set against Raymond to win 7-6 6-?, and Mauresmo won Schnyder 6-1 6-4.

Because top ranked players do not usually choke. Thats why they are top ranked players. If monica was not a top ranked player she would have lost her last two matches when she "lost her concentration".

Top players do choke but that's not what happened today. At 5-2 in set two, Cho simply did what she had been threatening to do in the whole match - she started running down every ball and played Monica the way that Martina does ... keep returning until Monica hits an error. Her defence was admirable. If anyone lost their concentration it was Cho at the start of the third, Monica simply cut down on errors.

Cho played a great match, and Monica clearly wasn't running all that well in the second set. Kart is right, cho plays Monica the way Hingis does. Cho's serves werne't even as hard as hingis, her hardest was something liek 88 Carillo said, and Seles did NOT punish her returns. But maybe Seles will be expecting Hingis' play and be used to it, who knows.

Anyone who ACTUALLY saw Justine play Bielek would see that Bielek played well in the first set which was 7-5

You know you can't tell everything by statistics

And most players have choked at some point in their career, some people really hate that term, but it happens and it has to my favourites many time.

Hingis' Australian Open choke this year was the biggest choke by a top player for a while.
