AO R1: Karin KNAPP (ITA) (#81) def. Monika WEJNERT (AUS) (WC/#522) 7-6(6) 6-4
Great effort though from the 16 y.o. Queensland rookie. Playing in her first Grand Slam main draw she held her own very well. She was hardly smacked off the court, and really hung tough for most of the match
In the opening set Knapp had several set points with Wejnert serving at 4-5. But Monika cooly saved them all and then went on to break Knapp's serve to take a 6-5 lead. She was within two points of winning the opening set but was forced to a tiebreak. In the tiebreak Wejnert was down 3-5 but won three points in a row to earn a set point. However Knapp closed it out 7-6(6) in just under an hour.
In the second Knapp ran out to an early 4-0 lead. Wejnert then struggled to hold serve for 4-1, but when she did she was right back in the match. She picked up her game and got it back to 3-4 where she had chances to level at 4-4. Unfortunately she couldn't take them and Knapp ran out a 7-6(6) 6-4 winner in a hotly contested match.
Mon's serve let her down, 12 double faults and only 56% of first serves into play. But she still managed to save 10/13 break points, thanks largely to her forcing play. Obviously Mon played her heart out and did a good job. You will definitely hear of her again in the future. She is very promising for the future of Australian tennis!
Well done to Karin, good luck in R2.
