Eleni Daniilidou #272 in the World

Hi All

Just checked the latest ranking on the WTA website and noticed that Eleni has dropped to a low of 272..

With a ranking that low she won't get into any tour events unless given a wildcard and will need to even qualify for $25.000 challenger events...

I've got to say I think the end in nigh and she is in fact on a 11 match loss streak!!!!

Re: Eleni Daniilidou #272 in the World

It really is a shame, I remember last year someone on this board posted the "potential this "new" player" had to be great, and i was like shes had it for years, shes been around and never broke through. sad to see shes fallen so far.

I thought for sure when i saw her player Venus in 2005 she have a breakthrough..... was she injured last year?

Re: Eleni Daniilidou #272 in the World

. She's only 26 though. She was injured in 2008 from Miami until the Olympics, and she still hasn't won a match since Indian Wells, even though she's only played like 11 matches

Daniilidou. Venus. Azarenka. Halep. Wickmayer.
Cornet. Ivanovic. Vesnina.. Vaidisova. Krajicek.
Paszek. Begu. Cirstea. Lisicki. Pavlyuchenkova.
Pironkova. Stephens. Tatishvili. McHale. Flipkens.
Grammatikopoulou ~ Papamichail ~ Sakkari
I'm obsessed with the Greek players. Deal with it.

ANNA GERASIMOU-EIRINI GEORGATOU ALWAYS AND FOREVER

Why doesn't she have a PR, or does she? She should get one, should she not?

I always liked Eleni. I really thought back in 2002-03 she was going to break the top 10

There wasn't 6 months between Miami and Olympic Games. Player have been out of competition a minimum of six months to get one.

What's much more disturbing to me is that Tatiana Golovin has dropped all the way to #320

Eleni is an incredible character. Unlike 99% of players on tour, she was willing to enter hard tournaments and try to cause upsets rather than enter easy tournaments simply to maintain a top 100 ranking.

Give her some credit, please

Thank you for everything Mercedes, now please be nice to Socrates for me, perhaps fetch him a bird or two. We love you, always.

Re: Eleni Daniilidou #272 in the World

Eleni had a very serious knee injury. At the time of the injury, it was generally thought that she would take the rest of 2008 off. In hindsight she should have at least taken six months out to ensure she was entitled to that protected ranking. But I guess to temptation to play in the Olympics was too great. From the results we have seen of hers since coming back it is obvious too that she was not ready.

Without the protected ranking there is no question it will be harder to come back. She will however I'm sure be given WCs to any ITFs or WTA qualifying events that she wants to play and Daniilidou does have, as kittyking mentioned, a whole lot of character and determination. It isn't going to happen overnight, but providing she stays fit, and to be honest that is never really a given, I feel confident Eleni will finish the year in the top 100.

Re: Eleni Daniilidou #272 in the World

Feel so sad for Eleni!!

She has been very unlucky with injury in her career and it's gonna be tough to get back to the top again, but I'm sure she can!! Sadly, her ranking has nothing to do with her tennis or talent...remember Eleni has a career high ranking of 14 and has won many WTA titles, including her last title at Hobart 2008. Getting injured in Miami was terrible bad luck for her, especially as she had the same problem with the other knee at the start of her career, but she managed to come back from that and she will come back from this too.

I personally think her biggest problem was coming back too soon, just to be able to play in the Olympics. It was obvious that she wasn't ready and if she had just stayed out a while longer she would have had injured protected ranking......but, wrong or right, she knows the rules, she knows the Tour, she knew the risks...and she made the decision to risk further injury and play the Olympics. Now, she's just gonna have to work even harder, play those lower tournaments and fight hard if she wants to get back up the top again.

Right now, she must be feeling pretty bad, being ranked that low with no coach and no results to build on........she really needs all the support she can get from the fans and the people around her!!

No, she wasn't. She was playing mainly challengers.
And as she was getting crashed by everyone, instead of playing 100k's she should have played 25k's or 50k's to get some match practice and some points.
