Soviet government didn't allow its players to compete at the same events South Africans entered, there were virtually no Soviet players at WTA tournaments at all till 1986-1987.

Russian tennis at this time consisted of Anna running off to Florida, a young Elena Dementieva crying, and little Nasty Myskina eating lots of pizza.

It's crazy.

Sharapova | Jankovic | Pavlyuchenkova

“They are definitely a good example of how local communities can overcome the ‘victim syndrome,’ take greater control over their lives and build productive futures for themselves,” Ms. Sharapova said - UN Goodwill Ambassador
