Re: Your thoughts on the 2009 WTA calendar?

I got a really good look at it yesterday and saw how bad it is
The clay events are all mushed together, Rome then Madrid then Berlin then Roland Garros, all in the span of 4-5 weeks
The fields at Rome and Berlin are going to suck considering Madrid is mandatory and Berlin is the week before Roland Garros.
I also, hate the rest after AO, Wimbledon and USO

Don't like it much. Too many big events back to back. The calendar was meant to streamline the tour - events are still all over the place and not particularly orderly in some spots. I don't like the clay season after Wimby - I wish they could make another week of grass tourneys and put the clay events that are after Wimby at least before it (if not before RG). Don't like the mandatory tourneys - especially Miami and IW being back to back.

Re: Your thoughts on the 2009 WTA calendar?

i think it's the worst thing that ever happened to tennis!

Daniilidou. Venus. Azarenka. Halep. Wickmayer.
Cornet. Ivanovic. Vesnina.. Vaidisova. Krajicek.
Paszek. Begu. Cirstea. Lisicki. Pavlyuchenkova.
Pironkova. Stephens. Tatishvili. McHale. Flipkens.
Grammatikopoulou ~ Papamichail ~ Sakkari
I'm obsessed with the Greek players. Deal with it.

Re: Your thoughts on the 2009 WTA calendar?

It hasn't started yet. The WTA needs big events. It can't just be majors, which are ITF, and a bunch of fluff that no one cares about.
They need all the stars, and the rest of the field, playing for big prizemoney.
And they need to get that on tv.

Re: Your thoughts on the 2009 WTA calendar?

It's the most nonsense I've ever seen; complete crap. I guess one or two of the ideas are alright, but overall it sucks. Only one top 10 player allowed into smaller events? Mandatory events?

throwing money at tennis and getting the top players to play somewhere they don't want to makes neither great tennis nor great tv, look at doha YEC are we calling that a success?

Re: Your thoughts on the 2009 WTA calendar?

Round robin doesn't work in womens tennis. Having Sveta and Dinara lose 3 two set matches in a row is nonsense.

In sports, the event creates the champion. Sharapova became a star when she won Wimbledon.

There's a big gap from January to late May with no major. The WTA should have a huge event in March. But not IW and Miami back to back. That's stupid.

One huge event to crown a champion.

Re: Your thoughts on the 2009 WTA calendar?

Urgh...the clay season is absolutely fucked up. All the Premiere events are stuck together and you have to commit to a ton of them so ultimately you'd overplay. And since it's on clay that means LONG rallies and LONG matches And as to why they have to put Rome together with Madrid within a week of each other, and similarly with Tokyo and Beijing, I have no idea.

Waiting for Ana Ivanovic to just retire already .
Justine Henin. Amelie Mauresmo. Francesca Schiavone.

Re: Your thoughts on the 2009 WTA calendar?

The WTA does things in a confusing way. I just looked at the prizemoney list and they gave Chakvetadze an extra $250,000. I guess that's from finishing 2007 at #6 and fulfilling her committments this year.
Jelena got an extra $500,000

It's not the right way to do things. Spread out the prizemoney more to the early rounds so players outside the top 50 can make a decent living
