Vaidisova Ex-Coach Ales Kodat has new player Danielle Mills

Recent change at IMG Bollettieri Acedamy has Ales Kodat, Ex Coach and StepFather of Nichole Vaidisova now taking on duties as the full time permanent coach of the young player, Danielle Mills, from the US. Kodat will travel and handle all aspects of the development of Mills, the tall 17 year old lefty from Florida currently ranked 683in the WTA. The academy seems pleased with this latest development and Kodat is spending all of his time with Mills to see if he can bring out her potential over the next two years.

Err...from what I understand the personal relationship between Nicole and Kodat broke down and Nicole decided she no longer wanted to work with him anymore and fired him. Whether that was a good decision or a bad decision by Nicole is something people on this board can debate but clearly Nicole was very much in her right to make this decision.

Under these circumstances, Kodat had only two options. He could beg Nicole to take him back as a coach, which might have been counter productive in terms of rebuilding his relationship with Nicole as a stepfather, as well as leaving Kodat in the awkward position of having to put his own career as a coach on hold. Or he could get back to what he does best and find someone else to coach. He has wisely chosen the later option.

No one knows the full story of what happened between him and Nicole that resulted in things breaking down between them. But Nicole is a 19 year old girl, and 19 year old girls often want their independence. I do know it is not easy for fathers or step-fathers to have to let go of their children but it is something that sometimes one has to do. It's a cliche but if you love someone set them free....and so on.

I would say Kodat's decision to coach Danielle Mills sends a strong message that he is prepared to let go of Nicole and get on with his own life. That has to be an admirable thing, and I wish him good luck.

I have questions!

Nicole's stepfather?!? I had never heard that. He is married to Nicole's mother? Did this happen after he became her coach (thus, he met her mother when coaching Nicole), or he first married her mother then took over as coach?

What does it mean "recent change at IMG Bolletieri Academy"? Kodat works for Bolletieri Academy? Within Bolletieri, they have students with private coaches? Who else is there with a private coach (some that we've heard of.... )? Was or Is Michelle Larcher de Brito there, and with a private coach?

How do you know about this change? Word of mouth, or do these things get announced and published?

Just heard from the $50,000 in Saguenay Canada. Mallory Cecil is there with her IMG coach Ariel Gaitan, and Danielle Mills is with her IMG coach, Alex Kodat. Some players get private coaches or just use parents. It just depends on each situation. Michelle's father is her coach.
