Mariana, the 19-year-old from Bogotá, Colombia, will be in the top 100 of the WTA rankings as of next week for the first time.
This is wonderful news for Latin American WTA tennis because the only other Latin Americans in the top 100 are Gisela Dulko (who is in a real slump) and Rossana De Los Rios (who will probably retire in a couple of years). There are only 10 Latin Americans even in the top 260 of the world.
Mariana has won 40 matches this year and lost 18. She is also a very good doubles player.
Last year she won 37 matches and lost 13. In the last 3 years she has won 8 ITF titles and 5 ITF doubles titles. She's already beaten good players like Tanasugarn, Pavlyuchenkova, Niculescu, Larcher De Brito, Meusburger, Wozniak in the last 2 years. She hasn't played very many top 100 players at all, that's why this list is developing.
She won a set off Cornet in the Junior French Open final last year and has recently pushed top players like Radwanska and Pennetta to tiebreaks. She is very good on clay, but she can also play excellently on hard.
Her game is still developing and she is still quite inexperienced but she is constantly learning and growing.
This week she's in the Semifinals of $50K Ashland.
