One Slam Wonders

Since the Open Era began in 1968 (Australian Open in 1969 since the French Open was the first major of the era), we've suprising have only had 14 one-slam singles wonders. That was a bit higher than what I thought it would be.

Runner Up: (2)
Australian Open - 1970
United States Open - 1972

Chris O'Neil (AUS) - 1978 Champion

Iva Majoli (CRO) - 1997 Champion

Runner Up: None

Anastasia Myskina (RUS) - 2004 Champion

Runner Up: None

*Ana Ivanovic (SRB) - 2008 Champion

Runner Up: (2)
French Open - 2007
Australian Open - 2008

Wimbledon: (2)

Conchita Martinez (ESP) - 1994 Champion

Runner Up: (2)
Australian Open - 1998
French Open - 2000

Jana Novotna (CZE) - 1998 Champion

Runner Up: (3)
Australian Open - 1991
Wimbledon - 1993
Wimbledon - 1997

United States Open: (1)

Gabriela Sabatini (ARG) - 1990 Champion

Runner Up: (2)
United States Open - 1988
Wimbledon - 1991

*Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS) IS NO LONGER ON THE LIST!!! - 2004 US Champion & 2009 FO Champion

Kim Clijsters (BEL) Kim Clijsters is waved goodbye as she takes herself off the list.
2005, 2009, 2010 US Open Champion

*Still an active player.

And here you are, a black unicorn.
Mythical and mystical since the day that you were born.

Re: One Slam Wonders

1977,78 Australian Opens and 1976-78 French Opens were slams only on paper. AO had a modern day Tier IV draw and virtually all top-tenners were missing at those FOs.

Re: One Slam Wonders

Clijsters, Sabatini, and Kuznetsova are the best 1 slam wonders on there (well, Kuznetsova may not be to Martinez's or Novotna's level, but she's active), and they all won the US Open. There really are no flukes there...

Re: One Slam Wonders

I'm surprised there aren't more crazy 1 time winners in Australia. Some weakass players must have won it twice.

Who?

And, players who have won it twice can't be considered weakass, can they? Shows that their first weren't exactly flukes.

Serena. Simona. Ana. Petra. Venus.
Clijsters, Henin, Dementieva, Davenport.
Martina Hingis - "No one else played like Hingis - no one could."

Re: One Slam Wonders

Since becoming the real slam in 1980s Australian Open has had the most impressive list of winners -- Evert, Navratilova, Mandlikova, Graf, Seles, Pierce, Hingis, Davenport, Capriati, Serena, Henin, Sharapova -- all of them are winners of at least two different slams.

Re: One Slam Wonders

i never think of clijsters as a 1 slam wonder

i guess she is...but she was so successful in a short career that 1 slam didn't give justice to what she achieved

Re: One Slam Wonders

Some of these players are One Slam Wonders. You wonder why they only did win one major. Clijsters and Sabatini should've been able to win more had they played a bit longer.

Not really, there have been enough quality Aussies during the bad years for the AO that it almost always had one legitimate top player (Court, Goolagong, etc.). Kerry Reid is actually a pretty quality player, too. The years without good players have surprising winners, but the rest of the time it makes pretty good sense.

Yeah, what year did the World Team Tennis season change so as to make the French Open an important tournament? I know the Australian attracted relatively modest fields all the way into the early 90's (serve and volleyers hated it, for some reason, Jana Novotna skipped out on it often, as did several middle-ranked S&V players), but the French switched to top-flight status in what, 1980?

The Aussie is frequently a gauge of who has done the most in the off season, and those tend to be the best of the best. When it was a year end event, it was a gauge of who had held up the best during the long season. You have to be pretty steady, mentally, off the blocks to win 6-7 matches in a row in that kind of heat, or pretty steady, mentally, to be that tough and focused that late in the year.

Re: One Slam Wonders

The likes of Sabatini, Martinez, Novotna, Kuznetsova and Clijsters don't fall under the "one slam wonder" category. They had extremely successful singles careers and Clijsters had a decent amount of time spent as the world number 1. Myskina and Majoli had good careers too even if you take away their French Opens.
