Sorana CIRSTEA: Top 50 entry for the romanian young gun. She's up 8 places after reaching the 2nd rd at the USO falling to 3rd seed/n°4 Kuznetsova.
Timea BACZINSZKY: Starting the year out of the Top 100, Timea is playing her best in 2008 with a full season with expecting results. A couple of years ago, Timea was under the media pressure as the new Martina Hingis. At 19 y.o, after struggling a couple of years with her confidence, she's about to break the Top 50 after reaching the 3rd rd at the USO ousting 31rst seed/n°33 Razzano en route before losing to eventual SF 6th seed/n°7 Safina in 3 sets.
Sabine LISICKI: She could be the german to follow in the next couple of years. At only 18, she's breaking the Top 75 after making to the 2nd rd a the USO falling in a tight 3 sets match vs 27th seed/n°31 Alona Bondarenko.
Magdalena RYBARIKOVA: Huge jump in the ranking for that slovakian new star. She reached her ever 1rst 3rd rd in a GS at the USO beating strong opponents as n°45 Gulko and n°68 Paszek before resisting to 15th seed/n°15 Schnyder.
Anne KEOTHAVONG: It took time, but Anne should be really satisfied about her last month progression. After breaking the Top 100 in June, she's now close to the Top 70 making her 1rst 3rd rd appearance in a GS at the USO overpowering 25th/n°27 tenacious Schiavone en route before losing to 5th seed/n°6 and eventual SF Dementieva.
Anastasia PAVLYUCHENKOVA: She turned 17 in june and she's the highest ranked teen born in 1991. French trainer Eric Moratoglou should be very excited to have this incredible talent in his academy who "produced" Baghdatis. Starting the year n°286, Anastasia is a real rocket on the tour breaking the Top 75 after the USO. She was for the 1rst time directly in the cut in GS and made it to the 2nd rd falling to skilled 15th seed/n°15 Schnyder.
Mathilde JOHANSSON: The french beauty blond keeps rising in the world ranking. At the USO, she reached the final rd of the qualies falling to up coming talent n°166 Pivovarova. Then, she came back to France to compete at Denain $75K challenger where she was stopped in QF to surprising eventual Runner up compatriot WC n°477 Laisne.
Mariana DUQUE MARINO: Who said that the south americans were only clay court player? Mariana proved that she has the game to play on hard reaching the 2nd rd as a qualifer at the USO. After qualifying she beat n°38 veteran Tanasugarn before falling to 9th seed/n°11 Agnieszka Radwanska.
Julie COIN: What a fairy tale for that french woman. Julie started to play on the pro tour after graduating from a american university. Before the USO, she was questionning her self about starting a new year on the pro tour in 2009. She definitevely changed her mind after an amazing journey at New York. As a qualifer, she made it to the 3rd round. In the qualies, she hardly fought ousting 25th seed/n°135 Baltacha to reach the MD. Then she surpringly ousted n°40 Dellacqua. But the most incredible appeared 2 days after when she creates the biggest sensation of the tournement beating Top seed/n°1 Ivanovic. Tired and under the media pressure, she wasn't able to produce the smae tennis against her idol compatriot 29th seed/n°32 Mauresmo.
FASTER MOVEMENTS IN THE TOP 10, 20, 50, 100, 150 and 200
TOP 10: Serena WILLIAMS n°1 (+2), Elena DEMENTIEVA n°4 (+2), Dinara SAFINA n°5 (+2):
What a year for Serena, she's back where she said she'll be at the beginning of the year. She proved to every body, even the more professional (like C.Evert), that she had all what she need to be back at the Top. She played her best to capture her 9th GS title (equaling Seles) at the USO ousting 2nd seed/n°2 Jankovic in final.
Elena has a great year too. After winning the Olympics Game, she reached her 3rd USO SF (after 2000 and 2005). She played strong tennis to reach the SF before falling to 2nd seed/n°2 Jankovic. She's back to her best ever best ranking.
What about Dinara! Now Dinara is a Top 5 elite after an amazing summer. She won the US Open seriesn and then reached her ever 1rst SF at the USO losing to 3rd seed/n°4 Serena Williams.
Flavia PENNETTA n°16 (+3): After struggling with injuries in 2006, Flavia came back from outside of the Top 100 to her best ranking n°16 (1rst time January 3à, 2006). At the USO, she made her ever 1rst QF in a GS falling to 6th seed/n°7 Safina.
Sorana CIRSTEA n°45 (+8): see above
Anna Lena GROENEFELD n°83 (+58): What a come back from that talented german former n°14. She didn't play until May. she had a huge work to do to recover fitness and anger to play. Anna Lena proved that she was back to trouble the pro circuit reaching the 4th rd as a qulifer at the USO. She produced one of the biggest upset of the 1rst rd beating 11th seed/n°12 Hantuchova in 2 sets. She kept rising her game ousting 17th seed/n°17 in form Cornet before falling to 6th seed/n°7 Safina.
Julie COIN n°130 (+58): see above
Nina BRATCHIKOVA n°194 (+29): Best progression of the TOP 200 and new career high for Nina, who reached the final rd of the qualies at the USO beating n°172 Poutchek before losing to n°254 Glatch
