Williams gives Open ratings a boost

Williams gives Open ratings a boost

NEW YORK (AP) -- The U.S. Open's television ratings got a boost with a Williams sister back in the finals.

Serena Williams' win over Jelena Jankovic on Sunday, pushed back a day because of rain, earned a 4.3 overnight rating and a 7 share on CBS, the network said Monday.

That's up 65 percent from the 2.6/5 last year when Justine Henin beat Svetlana Kuznetsova. It's the highest rating since an all-Williams final in 2002, when Serena's victory over Venus drew a 7.2/13.

The rating is the percentage watching a program among homes with televisions, and the share is the percentage tuned into the broadcast among those households with TVs on at the time. Overnight ratings measure the country's largest markets.

Zap2it reported a 3.3/5 rating, which is about on par with 2006 when Maria won against Justine, if memory serves me right. Sunday night ratings are typically higher than Saturday nights since more people watch TV on Sundays. It probably would've been even higher if it wasn't running against NFL on NBC.

Re: Williams gives Open ratings a boost

not hard to beat last year's final's ratings... people know the williams sisters, even if they dont follow tennis, but say justine henin and svetlana kuznetsova to someone that doesnt follow the sport and you'd get a 'who'?

That just comes to show how much people want to see a Williams sisters vs Henin or anybody else... This news IS to be expected...they are the greatest thing to hit the WTA..and deep down inside EVERYBODY knows it.

Venus and Serena ....Often imitated NEVER duplicated!!!!!!!

Even my neighbors who don't watch tennis stayed up late to watch the match. They called me at 6-5 to explain the score because Serena hadn't won.

Before you speak to me about your religion, first show it to me in how you treat other people; before you tell me how much you love your God, show me in how much you love all His children; before you preach to me of your passion for your faith, teach me about it through your compassion for your neighbors. In the end, I'm not as interested in what you have to tell or sell as in how you choose to live and give.

I had a friend who is not a tennis fan who called me also at 5-5 to say she was riveted to the tv and to see how I was coping with the tension. I was even more surprise when she called back immediately after the match so elated over the victory.

In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the SILENCE OF OUR FRIENDS. MLK

For all the people complaining about how the WTA sucks, the women's final was definitely way more entertaining than the men's today.

They didn't even show it here on regular tv, it was shown on some ridiculous channel. I guess it was TTC. They pissed me off during football season last year and now this. The only reason I've stayed with them is because I have cable, phone, and internet bundled. I'm getting a dish and they can go to hell.

Your local CBS affiliate didn't show the match?
