For all the injury talk, Quarterfinals looking GOOD

Now the tournament really gets started...

We've had the injuries and withdrawals and what appeared to be a dismal tournament but with tomorrow's line-up, things are shaping up quite nicely. Win tomorrow and you're guaranteed 2 more matches - putting yourself in the running for a bronze medal.

Let's examine the matchups

Vera v Bammer - Vera leads 2-0 in H2H. Both matches going 3 sets including this year when Vera took the 3rd set 6-0. Expect another 3-setter with Vera moving on to the medal rounds.

Venus v Na Li - This will be the first match-up between these two ladies. Advantage LI because Venus normally has problems with 1st time opponents. But this is the Olympics and Venus really wants another Gold. Her confidence is normally high after winning Wimbledon so expect Venus to find a way to pull this out.

Jankovic v Safina - The Safinator is taking down everything and everyone in her path. She looked great today and almost seems unbeatable. Jankovic will definitely push her but with Dinara's confidence soaring like it is, I expect Safina to win it. They are tied 2-2 in H2H competition. Safina took the last match just 2 weeks ago in LA. Also, if Jelena is really telling the truth about her injuries, there's no way she wins this. But I suspect she has exaggerated the injury.

Serena v Dementieva - It's like the good old days of USA v Russia. Undoubtedly, the match of the day. The last meeting went to Elena 6-1 in the third. Will Serena get revenge or will Elena start a winning streak against the 8 time slam champion? Serena leads H2H 4-1 but her last victory was in 2004. I suspect Serena is coming to this match ready to fight. Elena will try to draw upon the magic her game exhibited last year in Moscow. This one is a toss-up. If Serena serves well, she takes this. If not, Elena just might pull off the upset.

People complain too much? Nothing new. That looks like a nice quarterfinal lineup to me.

I always wanted to be somebody. If I made it, it's half because I was game enough to take a lot of punishment along the way and half because there were a lot of people who cared enough to help me.

3 Russians in the Top 8

My picks:
Vera
Venus
Safina
Serena

Which would set up 2 American-Russian SF.

The only one that is not even remotely interesting is the first QF. I agree though, nice lineup.

Serena vs Elena is the most worthy. Vera and Sybille could be a Tier IV 1r...

My picks...

Vera
Venus
Dinara
Serena

serena, jankovic, venus, na, hsieh, date-krumm, jovanovski
makarova, diatchenko, halep, goerges and kvitova

Re: For all the injury talk, Quarterfinals looking GOOD

Venus vs. Na Li....yes, Venus in the past struggles with surprise first-time opponents...but I still expect her to win this. but gosh, the unforced error count in this match is gonna be a hot messss.

Re: For all the injury talk, Quarterfinals looking GOOD

I think Vee is going to win,she moves better than Na Li who might not be fully recovered from her knee injury.Venus wants a medal bad and she will fight for that medal
