USTA drops commercials featuring Gimelstob

Associated Press

Updated: July 9, 2008, 5:56 PM

Former tennis pro Justin Gimelstob's sexist comments on a radio show have gotten him in trouble again.

Television commercials featuring Gimelstob promoting the U.S. Open Series are being scrapped by the U.S. Tennis Association because of what he said about Anna Kournikova and other women last month.

"Justin Gimelstob's recent comments on a Washington, D.C., radio program were derogatory and demeaning to female tennis players and to women in general. The USTA has long championed integrity, inclusiveness, diversity and equality and cannot ignore such harmful remarks. More than any other sport, tennis has benefited from the pioneering role and achievements of so many women," the USTA said in a statement released to The Associated Press on Wednesday.

"As a result of his remarks, the USTA is discontinuing its planned use of Justin Gimelstob in the 2008 Olympus U.S. Open Series television ad campaign. The USTA has met with Justin, who has expressed deep remorse and has issued his sincere apology. We anticipate that he will learn from this experience and that he will be able to contribute to the game of tennis in the future," the statement said.

In the radio appearance, Gimelstob used a derogatory term to describe Kournikova, a former tennis player, and made suggestive comments about current top-25 player Nicole Vaidisova.

"I respect the USTA's decision," Gimelstob said in a telephone interview with the AP on Wednesday. "They've been great to me over the years, and I appreciated the opportunity. Unfortunately, I take full responsibility for what happened on the show and I deeply regret it. And I'm sorry I didn't represent them or myself the way that I feel like I could have or should have. I'm apologetic and remorseful and wish I could take it back, but I can't."

Gimelstob retired from the men's tennis tour last year and is on the board of the ATP.

After his radio remarks, he was suspended for one match without pay by World TeamTennis but stayed on the air during Wimbledon for his job with the Tennis Channel. That channel issued a statement and apology on its Web site and requested that Gimelstob make a "substantial" donation to the Women's Sports Foundation, which was created by Billie Jean King in 1974.

"I made a mistake and I've apologized. I just hope people accept my apology. I believe that I have positive things to offer the sport and I hope I get back to the point of contributing," he said Wednesday. "I think what I did deserved repercussions, and that's what I'm experiencing now. I have to take responsibility for it and learn from it and move forward."

Gimelstob was to appear Wednesday night in a World TeamTennis match for the Washington Kastles at the New York Buzz in Albany, N.Y.

He will serve his suspension Friday, when the Kastles host the Buzz.

Still not forgiven, Justin. But good on the USTA for taking action.

Even without this situation, he is so annoying. Just a waste. He orgasms about every American man and has no knowledge of the female game. This is their excuse to get rid of him and make my ears feel better.

Re: USTA drops commercials featuring Gimelstob

Gimelstob has been openly sexist for years.
He wrote this for CNN.SI in 2005 -

Pretty soon the WTA practice courts, and maybe even the match courts, will resemble a women's volleyball court, with g-strings and bikinis being the only logical next step. Not that I'm complaining, or even think that wouldn't be a valuable marketing tool. But I'd like to recommend to players both female and male, and even coaches out on the practice courts: If you resemble a beached whale, keep your gear on!

Another dynamic I find interesting is the players' lounges at joint events. In these player-exclusive hangouts, you'll find two groups of women: On one side you have the WTA players, many of whom are very attractive and in great shape. Unfortunately for them, they have to share the space with the most beautiful one percent of female creatures on the planet: men's players' girlfriends and wives.
It's an unfair competition when you have the girlfriends showing up looking like they're ready to stroll down a runway. Meanwhile, you've got the female players hanging out in tennis gear, dripping sweat from their practices and matches. We all know women are competitive creatures, and even I have some sympathy for the players who have to deal with the "glamour girls" whenever they turn the corner.

The most wasted of all days is one without laughter....
Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there
Enjoy This Moment!!
HEALTH and HAPPINESS to EVERYONE

What an ass - that statement and the entire radio interview (which I've read 2-3 times). He also seems really uneducated - to be consumed by this kind of crap means there is a vacuum in his brain instead of meaningful thoughts.

I am really very happy with USTA for their decision. WTT and Tennis Channel both took action, which surprised me, and TC's statement made an impact, but both WTT and TC could have/should have done a bit more.

USTA's statement and action are even stronger and as a woman AND a USTA member, I appreciate it very much.

Re: USTA drops commercials featuring Gimelstob

I'm beginning to wonder that the reason why men's tennis seems so sexist is because it is really the only major sport in the world were we see men and women competing together at the same time in a lot of major events.

Sure you have track and field, but you never seem to hear the male athletes say crappy things about the women in those sports.

Pretty said thing we have men like this involved in a sport we love.

Re: USTA drops commercials featuring Gimelstob

There is one downside--I haven't seen them, but from the description in this month's USTA magazine they sound like they might have been funny--in one, TOB allegedly slaps him.

But yes, I don't understand why some men seem to have such a thing about the fact that women play tennis, too. I like to watch both. Whatever else you may think, at least Federer seems to give the ladies some credit.

Good riddance! He's just a piece of misogynistic garbage, and I'm glad he's being treated as such by the USTA.

Poor little Justin is all remorseful for his bad ways... Ya, and I'm the Queen of Sheba!
