Why exactly is women's tennis weak?

Did women's tennis become "weak" with the loss of one player? People were saying the same thing when Henin was absent at last year's AO. Or was it simply that too many seeds went out before the quaters of the tournament? And wouldn't that prove the depth in the game?

I believe its main weakness is that women try to emulate men but since that is not possible they put everything they have into how hard they can hit the ball, and very little is left for tactics, technique, finesse, variety.

Re: Why exactly is women's tennis weak?

When a one hundred and something ranked player beats or challenges a high ranked player on the men's side the media grab their collective organs and chirp on "What depth there is in the ATP!" But when this happens in a match involving the beautiful sex, it for some reason does a 360 degree and becomes a sign of lack of depth and weakness! The reason for this? There can only be one, deep, ingrained chauvinism

BepaZvonareva Don't read my reps anymore, very relaxing Lydia Ko , Felicity Jones, Emilia Clarke, Rachel Khoo.

considering in each grandslam there are about 6 contenders to win it, i dont call that weak. i call it competitive.

It is much more competitive and deep (at the very top) than the mens game atm IMHO

I think with her serve and her athleticism, her power, her court mobility, I just think when she’s on, she’s the greatest player we’ve ever seen, ever. Now, whether her record is the greatest remains to be seen because she hasn’t retired yet. But I think she is really the greatest player. I have seen Martina and Steffi at their best. There are little chinks in those players’ armor, but it was a different era, where you didn’t need to be the perfect player.

Re: Why exactly is women's tennis weak?

The women's game just don't have the same depth than the men's side. For example you can have some close matches between a top seed and a noname player in the first round of a slam in the men's side, while on the women's side the top seeds are rarely in trouble before the 4th round.

Err...Wimbledon?

Men: Nadal and Federer combined lost one single set until the final (I think). Women: #1 and #2 and #3 seeds all lost before the quarters...

Loot at the Top 12 or so of the ATP: Wawrinka, Gasquet, Murray, Almagro plus overrated and one-dimensional Roddick...I think the depth ot the ATP is a bit overrrated...even though I love watching men's tennis

Re: Why exactly is women's tennis weak?

It's weak now because Henin was such a league above everyone else. She lifted the women's to an unprecedented level and now it's like, who's gonna do that again? Who's gonna step up and play some of that phenomenal tennis? Henin's masterful tennis is still fresh in our memories and it's gonna take a while for people to accept that the current top women aren't as good.

A very refreshing thought. I suppose not far from the right answer to the question posed.
