Question Has a player ever had to retire a Match on match point or closing out the match???

I've never heard of anything like this but i thought it would be an interesting topic. I think Mary Pierce injuried her knee when she was closing out the match? She was play Zvonareva right??

Jelena Jankovic

I've heard of matches where a player has a slight injury, plays until they reach match point, but retire because they know they can't compete another day.

I think yes, when someone was beating Franny comfortably. 6-0 5-4? I think
It was pretty recent, and I think the person who was beating Fran was Meghan

I've always wonder about that.

Would be very interesting to see what the stat pros on this board can tell us.

Zakopalova retired from a twisted ankle against Pennetta in the finals of Vina del Mar.
Pennetta was up 6-4 5-4...
Sucky way to win a tournament..

I'm pretty sure Stevenson did. But she probably wasn't that injured, just more of bad sportsmanship than anything else.

I know the Chanda Rubin once retired when she was up 64 44 against Ruxandra Dragomir at one of the American clay tournaments in 2001. This would've been a win because Rux wasn't winning any matches during that time.

Fed Cup 2006

Ana Timotic (SRB) d. Anna Smashnova (ISR) 57 45 ret.

Smashnova had 3 MPs when she got injured, but I think she played some points after the injury so I don't know if she had MP when she retired or not.
