The story of "Maria" and "Roger"!

Let's say your name is... mmmmm - how about Roger. You have a co-worker named, oh let's just say Maria. You are both in the business of selling tennis racquets to sporting goods stores. You do this by making presentations to the buyers for these sporting good stores. You both work very hard, let's say 50 hours a week! You both have to prepare your presentations every day. You both have to pay assistants and sales coaches. You both have to stay at expensive hotels on out of town sales calls! You both have to fly a lot. You both put in a great deal of work preparing. In short you both have the same damned job and work your asses off!

It just turn out though, that Maria's presentations are a lot shorter and sometimes they are a little bit less elaborate than yours. You know though that Maria's sales figures are quite good and she has just as many fans.. excuse me!! customers as you do!

So you and Maria have the same job, the same expenses, and both deliver the product equally well. Do you think that since Maria's presentations tend to run shorter than yours that she should be paid less for the whole job? Some of your customers are actually only doing business with your company at all because she works there.

Do you think Maria deserves less money?

No, because Maria does her job and her sales figures are as good

Get better soon, Maria.

As I wrote in the other thread about equal prize money, it's been decided and that's that. For the record, no I don't believe that *Maria* deserves less money.

The reason is, personally I enjoyed the women's tournament this year often more than the men's (there was more drama). With the exception of the final -- I enjoyed the men's more because I felt they played a higher quality match -- not because of the length of time spent on court, but because neither player wilted mentally when it counted. But, that's just one match out of the many played over two weeks.

Re: The story of "Maria" and "Roger"!

Well, in terms of how big-name tennis players actually make money, it really is about selling tennis racquets (and shoes, and other things). And Federer gets paid: 35+ million dollars per year, while Sharapova gets paid 21+ million dollars per year.

Five tournaments a year, women make as much as men. Four of those five tournaments make the men play an extra set or two or three. But the other 60+ tournaments, in which women play as much as men, the men make dramatically more money than women. And sponsors give the best male sponsor draws dramatically more money than women.

So for all the chauvinists out there, ask yourselves why women are stuck making 40% less per year than men for the same amount of work, and then ask yourselves if you think the prize money debate is unfair to men.

Finally, Serena will steal Maria's man Roger and they'll live together happily.

Sensitive subject of prize money again, huh? The story is quite good but better parallel to tennis would be if Maria and Roger worked for different companies as ATP and WTA are different companies (if someone pointed it already out I apologize, I was able to read only a few posts). If Maria's company and Maria can command the prices and revenues as Rogers by all means she should be making in this same range no question. There is nothing about deserving here, just pure business. In fact if they command more, than the should be making more.

Re: The story of "Maria" and "Roger"!

Why was this bumped? I still don't see how it's relevant or valid. All but 9 and a half weeks out of the year, the men out-earn the women 2 to 1. Is it odd that 8 of those 9 and a half weeks are the 8 weeks the men have the strongest case to earn more? Of course. But so long as you can pick up a 2.5 million dollar cheque at Monte Carlo and the women fight for 1 million at a comparable event while playing just as much or more, you really have no business complaining.

Re: The story of "Maria" and "Roger"!

I think Maria should make the same amount of money, but I'm not sure about her co-workers Jelena, Dinara, Elena, Ana, Vera, Sveta and Agnie. I think they all need to work on trying to make their presentations a little better, cuz they kind of suck right now
