Dementieva should have beaten Venus but she choked

I was loving how Dementieva was kicking Venus Williams's butt and pushing her deep behind the baseline in that whole second set of their semifinal and I was so pissed that she choked by missing those forehands in the tie breaker. I know this board is owned by Williams fans and people are gonna be pissed about my comment but it's truth and I don't give a damn what you people think I am just disgusted that Dementieva choked again in a critical match I know I should be used to it by now.

Don't feel too bad even if she had won the second set she would've lost in the third. Don't forget that they were playing on grass.

I'm not quite sure what match you saw. Dementieva played some good points and then Venus would. And then both would hit errors. Not quite sure if you're on the same planet as us.

Dementieva didn't even win a set, not quite sure how she choked. Venus Williams in a third set at Wimbledon? I wouldn't bet on Elena.

Dementieva was clearly the better player once she finally showed up at 0-2 in the second set and I'm pretty certain she would have cleaned Venus clock in the third.

Re: Dementieva should have beaten Venus but she choked

lol, I kinda agree. Venus looked very weak in the tie-break. Her first serve went down, the power on the ground strokes was starting to go off, and she was starting to look tired.

Instead of seizing the opportunities, she felt the pressure and committed all those silly errors. A double fault, three forehand UE, and one BH UE (that's 5 points out of 7). That's why champions are few and chokers are many on the WTA. (I'm not counting the mp as an UE, even though it arguably is).

Had it gone into a 3rd, Demented would've been the favorite.

Dementieva a favorite in the 3rd? Did you guys not see the Petrova QF? Where have you been for the past 8 years with Venus at Wimbledon?

I disagree. And the tennis alone is not the only aspect of a match. There are other intangibles. Mentality, nerves, everything. While Elena may have been playing better tennis in the second, Venus played the better match. There is a distinct difference. You can play great tennis but you need to play a great match.

I don't think you could say that unless Lena had some lead or something.

EXACTLY. Venus didn't win the match, Elena lost it. And you can say that about the entire tournament. Venus beat a ridiculous collection of players except for the last two matches (and even Serena barely showed up for that final!). In the WTA right now it's unfortunately defined by an utter lack of competition.

Omg.

I love it that when a Williams Sister wins a title, everyone goes: "The tour is so weak!" But when someone beats a Williams Sister en route to a title, it's: "The tour is so strong!".

Get over it. Venus Williams is the 2008 Wimbledon Champion.

I think she would've been a favorite because Venus' game was starting to fall off and she was looking tired. But you're right. nerves and mentality are huge factors. Demented couldn't win the tie-break, so why the hell should she win the 3rd set? It's not like Venus didn't deserve to win. She was the one with the better head, but Elena did miss a huge opportunity.

lol @ all the Williams defensive trolls. You can't discuss anything on this board.

Defensive troll? I think I am discussing it pretty easily and calmly. No one is saying Elena played worse than Venus. Because in fact, she did play better after 2-0. But sometimes that is not enough.

I agree that the competition up to the final was downright ridiculous. Even though Jie put up a great fight, she was never going to do some very serious damage when she has no second serve. And Dementieva is a headcase. So even if she plays well, she will find a way to lose. But can't blame the WS. It's not their problem if everyone else is crap. They did show in the final that they were the two best players in the tournament.
