Venus, Serena (and now Maria!) have the X factor - 10 years of reaching Slam finals
When Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova played the Australian Open final a week ago, there's one thing that was certain. Both players had the X factor (as in Roman Numeral X) That's because they've both been reaching Grand Slam finals for over 10 years - a remarkable achievement
To go even further: Serena has the XV factor, since she has span of FIFTEEN YEARS between her first final (U.S. Open 1999) and the Australian.
Maria was very close - after her first final at Wimbledon 2004, she reached the Roland Garros final in 2014, just one slam away. But she finally joined the X club when she got to the final in Melbourne.
And don't forget about Venus Williams! She reached the U.S. Open final in 1997, and she's a five-time Wimbledon champion in 2008. She also reached the final in 2009. I first wrote this post after her 2008 Wimbledon title (and am finally updating it in 2015 ), and Venus is still here...maybe if she keeps playing at this level, she'll start the XX Club in 2017?
These are remarkable achievements, for all of these women and I'm surprised that it doesn't get more attention. How often do we have three players of such longevity playing for such a long time, and at such a high level?
The list of other modern players who have achieved that is rather short, and contains some of the true legends of women's tennis. Here's the complete list:
Serena Williams - U.S. Open 1999 - Australian Open 2015
Venus Williams - US 1997 - Wimbledon 2009
Maria Sharapova - Wimbledon 2004 - AO 2015
Mary Pierce - Roland Garros 1994 - US 2005
Steffi Graf - RG 1987 - Wimbledon 1999
Martina Navratilova - Australian Open 1975 - Wimbledon 1994
Chris Evert - RG 1973 - AO 1988
Billie Jean King - Wimbledon 1963 - Wimbledon 1975
Margaret Court - AO 1960 - US 1973
Venus, Serena and now Maria always had the numbers to prove their greatness. Now they have time on their side, too.
