I'm surprised to see Mariana Alves officiate Serena's GS match

I remember Serena said in 2003 that she doesn't want to have Alves be the referee during any of her matches after the USO Capriati match.
I guess they made up since. To have her back calling Serena match, in a GS semi no less, is a big deal.

I'm surprised Mariana Alves is still an umpire.

I think she can't umpire any match at the US Open
But I think they gave her another chance with the beginning of the challenges

Venus and Serena

Re: I'm surprised to see Mariana Alves officiate Serena's GS match

Marianna Alves should never unpire a match of Serena Williams again. Especially in a grand slam. How can a chair umpire who did such a terrible job to Serena in the 2004 U.S. Open be given a Wimbledon semifinal match of Serena's to umpire. It doesn't add up. Maybe Larry Scott is behind it.

Happiness is like a cat. If you try to coax it or call it, it will avoid you. It will never come. But if you pay no attention to it and go about your business, you'll find it rubbing up against your legs and jumping into your lap. - William Bennett

too bad the reporters didn't notice... it would have been nice had they asked Serena her thoughts about it.

Re: I'm surprised to see Mariana Alves officiate Serena's GS match

Mariana Alves has been at the US Open nearly every year since 2004. She's a gold badge chair umpire (the very highest reserved for a small few), nonetheless, and is essentially mandated at each grand slam.

I bet she requested to not do Serena's matches (it's the chair umpire who says which players she'd rather not umpire not the player's... though it's often mutual)but now must have been a change of heart.

Umpires make errors. Players make errors. If umpires made only a quarter as many errors as players do in a match, players still would be upset.

Hoping Lang or Welch are up on the chair for the ladies' final.

Re: I'm surprised to see Mariana Alves officiate Serena's GS match

She officiated both Venus and Serena's matches? I didn't notice her on Serena's match, but the commentators did mention her US Open faux pas on Venus' match on NBC as being the sole reason for the challenge system.
