Why Can Nobody Win Back To Back Titles???

Kirilenko and Bondarenko go down in straights this week after solid performances the past week. Sure, Kirilenko had to make the tough transition from clay to grass. And Bondarenko survived a 7-6 in the third to win the Birmingham championship. And they both had to travel a bit. But seriously--it's almost gotten to a ridiculous point in women's tennis. After winning a title, you either withdraw from your next event or lose early in your next event. Of course, I'm talking about back to back weeks here (Serena, this year, was smart when piecing together her win streak...taking a couple weeks off between Bangalore and Miami and then between Miami and Charleston.) I know the women's game has gotten incredibly intense and physical in the past ten years or so--we will never go back to the days of Navratilova winning 177 singles titles. But still, it seems ridiculous that people can't string together two good consecutive events anymore.

Any thoughts?

That's why Kirilenko and Bondarenko aren't top 10. Back to back titles is tough enough for the top players to do, nevermind everyone else.

Re: Why Can Nobody Win Back To Back Titles???

Venus and Lindsay have dominated the american hardcourt season wth back to back titles quite a few times.

In 1998 Lindsay won Stanford - San Diego - Los Angeles - QF New Haven - US Open

In 2000 Venus won Wimbledon - Stanford - San Diego - New Haven - US Open - Olympics (unbelievable!!!)

In 2001 Venus won San Diego - New Haven - US Open

In 2002 Venus won Stanford - San Diego - New Haven
In 2004 Lindsay won Stanford - San Diego - Los Angeles - Cincinatti!

You just dont get players as consistent as that these days!!

I didn't mean to say that no one else won titles in consecutive weeks, I was just naming a player that I knew about and that was fresh off my mind. But that Indian Wells-Miami is certainly more impressive.

I think there are a few weeks in between both tournaments no
