GS finals between slam-less players

The women's final got me thinking about how many times we have had a GS final between two players, neither of whom had won a GS title and it's quite rare! In the open era (which is 42 years) this will be the 169th women's GS final and of those only 14 featured two players with no GS title:

2010 RG - Stosur/Schiavone*
2008 RG - Ivanovic/Safina
2004 USO - Kuznetsova/Dementieva*
2004 RG - Myskina/Dementieva
2003 RG - Henin/Clijsters
1998 WIM - Novotna/Tauziat
1980 AO - Mandlikova/Turnbull
1979 AO - B Jordan/Walsh*
1978 AO - O'Neill/Nagelsen*
1977 RG - Jausovec/Mihai*
1977 AO (Jan) - Melville Reid/Balestrat
1976 RG - Barker/Tomanova*
1974 RG - Evert/Morozova
1971 RG - Goolagong/Gourlay

Of those just 6 *(2010/2004 RG, 1979/78 AO, 1977/76 RG) featured two players who had never made a GS final before. The interesting thing is the 18 year gap between 1980 AUS and 1998 WIM and that the 98 WIM and 04 USO finals are the only ones in 40 years at that slam between two players who'd never won before. Also some of the AO's and RG's of the late 1970's didn't feature many top players as few travelled to Melbourne and the World Team Tennis was on at the same time as the French.

Re: GS finals between slam-less players

Thanks for the stats! This really shows how dominant most of the slam champs are. It's so hard for new players to break through the other champions.

Re: GS finals between slam-less players

2004 was a bad year, not for the players that benefitted but neither sveta or msykina has won a slam since and lena d hasn't reached a slam final since, i think that says alot.

Anna Chakvetadze Rules

Kim Clijsters - Supporting the comeback!

2007 was worse.
Chakvetadze got to #5 by playing like 38 mickey mouse tournaments

2004 year-end Top-10 included:
Davenport, Mauresmo, Myskina, Sharapova, Kuznetsova, Dementieva, Serena, Henin, Capriati, Venus. 8 Slam champions + 2 Slam finalists. 6 former #1 + 1 former #2 + 1 eventual #1 + 1 eventual #2

can anyone ever respond to me without bashing chavetadze, i expected more from you annak 4ever. its so sad people cant except opinions so bring chakvetadze into things to try and bring me down. i said it was a good year for the people that prospered just not the big names that have been dominant before and after '04, it was a bad year for the slam champions!

nope 2004 was the worst year ever
all major players were injured or off form most of the time
just because they ended in top 10 doesnt mean that they were necessarily anywhere near their peaks that time
if i am not mistaken davenport was no 1 even without a slam final
goes to show how fit all the major contenders were that year

2007 slam winners: Serena, Justine, Venus, Justine
2004 slam winners: Justine, Myskina, Sharapova, Kuznetsova

Speaking from a strictly slam sense, which cleary he was, 2004 was worse.

I used to list my favorite tennis players here...
...then they all retired.
I used to keep track of my rankings in fantasy games here...
...then I realized how much I suck.
I used to update this signature, once in a while...
...then I realized no one actually reads it.

Also, Chakvetadze's slam results in '07:
QF, QF, 3R, SF

Top 10:
1) Henin: N/A, Win, SF, Win
2) Kuznetsova: 4R, QF, QF, F
3) Jankovic: 4R, SF, 4R, QF
4) Ivanovic: 3R, F, SF, 4R
5) Sharapova: F, SF, 4R, 3R

Hmm.. To me she has results as good as Jankovic and more consistent than Ivanovic and Sharapova.

The rest of the top 10:

7) Serena: Win, QF, QF, QF
8) Venus: N/A, 3R, Win, SF
9) Daniela: 4R, 3R, 4R, 1R
10) Marion: 2R, 4R, F, 4R

Anna's results are better than Daniela's and Marion's, and even with Venus's win Anna was overall better than her.

So, that means that Anna's grand slam results are as good as or better than 6 of the other top 9. So, by that logic she should've been 4th in the world!

So, yeah, I'd say Anna did a little more than "win mickey mouse tournaments." Plus she had wins over Jankovic and Daniela twice and one over Venus........

4 mickey mouse titles + 4 mickey mouse draws at Slams = year-end #6
