Post Ranking drops you have never expected

Just went through the rankings a bit:

74. Kristina Brandi (saw her last year at Wimbledon, should be ranked higher)
104. Anne-Gaelle Sidot (was in top 25, so much talent, a shame )
119. Lubomira Bacheva (should be higher as well)
121. Silvija Talaja (was/is top 20-material)
130. Corina Morariu Get well soon !
132. Ruxandra Dragomir (much talent, end of career ?)
133. Amanda Hopmans (serve-and-volleyer, I hoped for more)
134. Mary Pierce (...)
143. Silvia Plischke (FO quarterfinalist a few years ago)
148. Patricia Wartusch
165. Kristie Boogert (last year's Wimbledon she played very well, end of career ?)
166. Laurence Courtois
168. Sarah Pitkowski (was in top 50 for a long time)
169. Vanessa Webb (damn injuries)
177. Els Callens
195. Sandra Nacuk (can play very well)
205. Mirjana Lucic (...)
212. Angelika Bachmann (expected her to enter top 100 and not top 300 )
219. Louise Latimer
224. Sonya Jeyaseelan (what has happened ?)
242. Fabiola Zuluaga (see Vanessa Webb)

Anna K I think it`s sad since she was in the top 10 before the injury

To the river so deep
We all end in the ocean
We all start in the streams
We're all carried along
By the river of dreams

So much unfulfilled talent.

Sidot, Zuluaga, Talaja, Dragomir, Jeyaseelan, Lucic, Nacuk, and Boogert have loads of talent but never seemed to reach their full potential.

In other notes:

Conchita is now #26. I knew it would happen someday but so soon?

Arantxa is also at #18, she has been teeter tottering with 18 and 19 but she still hasn't dropped OUT of the top 20.

It's weird that these 2 have been in the top 10 for more then 10 years and in just one year they got out.

Brie Rippner #178 - Way better than that, unfortunately terrible luck with the injuries.

#193 Maureen Drake, and #200 Elena Tatarkova - Not too long ago both of these two were playing all the maindraws and ranked in the top 50. Now both are slowly trying battle back from injuries back where they once were.

#50 Patty Schnyder - Don't know how she manages to lose some of the matches she plays because she's got tons of talent. She is at least top 20 material still if she could get her head together again.

But he loves you."

Still trying to figure Mary Pierce. Has she lost her desire or what?

A lot of those were due to significant injuries. And I think a good many are "rhythm" players; players who have to play a lot to play well. When their rankings slip a bit, and they start meeting seeds earlier (and losing earlier), they lose their timing. It also shows how important confidence is at this level. Two players of equal ability could wind up 50 spots apart purely because of confidence.

I think Ruxandra Dragomir has fallen victim to the same malady as Irina Spirlea. Once they got married, they don't place as much importance on their tennis. Some players (Halard, Farina) improve dramatically with the personal stability marriage brings. Others seem to lose interest in the game.

Silvia Talaja and Sylvia Plischke were ones, at the time ('99 season) I thought would be definite Top 30 (even Top 20) material, but Talaja I'm sure got injured.

What about Olga Baranschikova (sorry about the mis-spell!), she's had a horrible injury, but again I thought she could do some stuff.

Oh yeah, and looking at Kirstie Boogert, she's playing an ITF event in Cardiff (according to my Ceefax?).

Olga has a serious foot injury and won't be back now until new year

Kristie isn't in Cardiff ... she played and lost in qualifying at $75K+H Poitiers

A real big slide for Mary Pierce!! It's just very unfortunate to suffer from injury!!

Always giving my 100% support to Jennifer Capriati, my awesome J-CAP!!!

I think the majority of those players listed are all injury related. Might as well add Maike Babel, Brenda Schultz-McCarthy and Mariaan DeSwardt to that list.

I am a little surprised about Sidot though. I did not think she had to many injuries and I do believe a lack of dedication or fitness could be her malady.

But the one player on that list that should not be there is Mirjana Lucic.

Such a talent going to waste...

From the French site lequipe:

Sarah Pitkowski, 25 ans, va mettre un terme à sa carrière internationale'

I think this is saying that Sarah is retiring; she got married on 7th July this year.

Amélie Mauresmo

2004 - WTA Ranked Number One!!

2005 - YEC Champion!!

2006 - Australian Open Grand Slam Champion!!

Believe it of not, Talaja was a top 20 player, ranked once at 18. I believe she has a few titles to her name, including Gold Coast a few years back.

I really feel bad for Patty. She has such talent and like Randy said, she has enough to get back into the top 20. I believe if she gets fit, stronger she could be ranked even higher than that. Gosh, I hope she finds her form and gets back, and soon!

Some good news, Fabiola Zuluaga is back, but I believe she falls off the ranking, due to no match play all year.

If I am not mistaken, Kristina has been ranked in the top 30. Has she? She deserves more, hopefully she can do well for a many more years.

Although there are a lot of players slipping, I have to say I'm very pleased to see Vetran players doing so and showing us all they still have it.

Continued luck to -

Iva Majoli - (Where was she a year and a half ago?)
Maggie Maleeva (What a great comeback eh?)
Silvia Farnia Elia - (She keeps climbing! Is she really retiring?)
Rachael McQuillian
Barbara Rittner
