Charleston: The Numbers, The Stakes. The Final.

Charleston: The Numbers, The Stakes. Prelim!

2007 Charleston finishing round and points are shown in the first
two columns, then the Rank and Points for the top 12 players.
Points earned at 2008 Charleston are projected by round to the
right. Note that a number of players have over 17 tournaments
so they need to earn more points than their 17th tournament before
the 2008 Charleston points earned add into their Ranking Points.

The Numbers:
Code:

-np- = not playing.
* 2007 points not included in the best 17 Tournaments points.
** 18th Tournament points considered.
The Stakes:

Pova: Ana and Kuzy are not playing. Pova can pass Kuzy for #3 with
a third round finish. Pova could also pass up Ana for the #2 rank
by making the Final! To catch Ana, Pova has to get by Serena in the
QF's. This adds a bit of spice to that prospective meeting.

JJ: JJ has possibilities to get back into the Top 4. The most obvious
is to make the Final and pass Kuzy. There are also scenarios where JJ
and Pova fight for the #3 and the #4 rank.

AChak: AChak has another opportunity to add to her lead over Venus.

Elena: Elena is in a tough spot. Serena is right behind her and there
are way too many scenarios where Serena recaptures the #8 Rank. Elena
has to outperform Serena to have a chance to keep #8.

Bartoli: Bartoli will pass Dani by reaching the SF's.

If you see a problem with a player's points, let me know. Be sure to
check their 17th tournament points first, though.

So, according to this... If Maria gets to the quarters and JJ to the final... Maria would be #3!

Re: Charleston: The Numbers, The Stakes.

You should add 60 pts to Elena's pts from the third round.

its such a good oppurtunity for achak to gain points, beating the winner of king vs cristea will improve her points by 25 and thats only getting to the 3rd round, such was her bad clay court season last year.

I don't think that's right. The 60 points from 2007 Berlin are currently in her 2305 Ranking Points as her 17 tournament. If Elena earns more than 60 points at Charleston, then Berlin's points are taken out: 2305 - 60 = 2245. Then Charleston points added in: if Elena made the QF's worth 110 points, then: 2245 + 110 = 2355.

Are we in agreement now?

If JJ is the defending champ, how can she add to her point total?

Re: Charleston: The Numbers, The Stakes.

Tuesday, 15Apr08,

If AChak falls in the 2nd rnd, Elena can pass both Venus and her with a Win. Serena will pass Venus by making the Final and also, with a Win, Serena will pass AChak if AChak doesn't get to the QF's or better.

AChak can protect her #6 rank with a deep run.

Elena and Serena can make ranks #6 to #9 a real positional battleground for future tournaments by going very deep here in Charleston.

The opportunities are there, will anyone take them?
