AI/Charleston real clay events? And do players use different footwear for playing on

Two questions in one

I hear people and also TV commentators saying...but these are not real clay events like the European clay...they are more like hardcourt surfaces with speed

And do players change footwear for playing clay events...to make them slide easier? Is it possible to get different treads on the footwear?

Green clay is a real clay surface. It's not very slow like red clay, it's just slow. You can play real claycourt tennis on green clay, and it was fantastic to see in person yesterday. It has weird bounces just like red clay, people get to shots they normally wouldn't on any other surface, and the moonballs were in fuuuuuull flight.

It seems it's easier to slide on red clay than green clay though. Biggest difference I noticed outside color of the surface and that it's slightly faster.

It's clay - but color is not only different characheristic in comparations with europian red clay...
Amelia Island (green clay) Winners after 2000:

2001 Amelie Mauresmo
2002 Venus Williams
2003 Elena Dementieva
2004/05 Lindsay Davenport
2006 Nadia Petrova
2007 Tatiana Golovin
2008 Maria Sharapova

I see here 0 (zero) red clay GS titles and only two finals.
On other hand this girls make 7 hardcourts and 7 grass GS titles from 26 HC/grass GS finals...

or if you more like
ATP Houston (Green Clay) after 2000:

2007 Ivo Karlovic
2006 Mardy Fish
2005 Andy Roddick
2004 Tommy Haas
2003 Andre Agassi
2002 Andy Roddick
2001 Andy Roddick

Despite fact that green clay is still more similar with red cay than medium HC clean difference in comparation with europian red clay exist.

and I'm not even fan of Ana Ivanovic... just an objective observer who realize how perfect she is

AMAZING BELGRADE MIRACLE: In just three years (2008-2011) 5 different players born in same city reach world #1 in rankings and several GS titles and finals (WTA singles: Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic, ATP singles: Novak Djokovic, ATP doubles: Nenad Zimonjic and Daniel Nestor... with notable performances of Bojana Jovanovski, Janko Tipsarevic and Viktor Troicki which is also all three born in Belgrade)

Green clay is like a hard court with a thin layer of firt sprinkled on it. It's sort of like a very slow hard court. It not very slidable.

Why compare Houston and Amelia Island?
Amelia Island often hosts the European claycourt elite, while Houston never does.

That's not a fair analysis. Venus, Amelie, Elena and Nadia are (or were) excellent clay courters. Green clay is a bit faster and easier to adapt to than a red one, but we have to take into account that many good clay courters are skipping this eveny. None from the upper echalon played here this year...

There is a clean difference but this argument is not the best to show it.What about past winners at Charleston ? Pierce, Majoli, Capriati, Henin, Sanchez etc...

Elena is way better at hardcourts and Venus and Amelie at all other surfaces.

I choose list of XXI century winners of Amelia and ATP Houston because that will present better my point about red/green difference. Tournament where is in this century most successifull player Lindsay Davenport or Andy Roddick is simple inpossible at red clay - but at green clay that is happen with AI and HOU.

BTW fastest RED CLAY surface is Rome... this difference is realy not so big, but even that is enough to make list of Rome winners "different" in comparation with RG and Berlin where "claycourt specialists" almost always dominate.

I think Charleston is the best indicator of who will win the French Open, and it's played on green clay.
