Re: Why, ESPN?

They figure Sharapova taped will bring in more viewers.
Which might be true.

Re: Why, ESPN?

Because they know that...Sharapova match from previous day > Live Cornet/Cibulkova match in ratings...Espn may be lame, but they arent dumb.

Re: Why, ESPN?

Unbelievable, they're reinforcing their own problem, of course no one's going to know Cibulkova or Cornet because they won't ever show them on tv.

Re: Why, ESPN?

I could understand that, but then, again, this is a match between two very attractive up-and-comers. They could have at least introduced them to an American audience

Re: Why, ESPN?

Seriously, no one but a small, devoted cadre of people gives a damn about these two. I don't think even the most ardent would say that they're really "up-and-comers" who will be at the top of the game some day.

Imagine how pissed ESPN is right now. They rarely shine the spotlight on women's tennis. And when they do, and there looks to finally be a tasty matchup, one of the girls bails out.

All it does is justify their reticence. And I can't say that I blame them.

Federer, Nadal or some of the others would have at least gone out on the court and tried.

Amen..I just got done emailing ESPN bc I am sooo pissed. The only coverage we have gotten is the same damn match as yesterday. Tennis ratings are NEVER going to get better if we are forced to watch the SAME player all the time.
ESPN is dumb bc the are losing viewership from real tennis fans. Casual fans could care less about this match as much as the live one we could be watching right now!!

Re: Why, ESPN?

As much as some of you may wnat to deny it, the number of people who have heard of both Dominika and Cornet is negligable. The number of people who have heard of Maria is well, not negligible. ESPN isn't stupid.

Re: Why, ESPN?

Change of plans
Davenport's withdrawal also affected ESPN. Her semifinal was scheduled as the featured match on ESPN2, and officials scrambled to a backup plan.
Instead of showing the live semifinal between Alize Cornet and Dominika Cibulkova that started at 1 p.m., ESPN elected to air a replay of Friday's Sharapova-Alona Bondarenko three-set match.
"It's tough. ESPN, they go a lot by ratings, and when Maria plays, our ratings are huge," said Fernandez, who was set to do the analysis with host Cliff Drysdale. "I think they juggled back and forth what to do. And the match [Friday] was so good and a little dramatic, and it went the distance.
"They decided to replay that because for the American audience, they don't know these new girls. But for me, I'm torn, because the only way to know them is to put them on [TV]."

The most wasted of all days is one without laughter....
Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there
Enjoy This Moment!!

Re: Why, ESPN?

I wonder what they would have done if the draw had somehow left Maria beating Cornet on Friday, and Bondarenko playing Cibulkova live on Saturday.

Bondarenko...might have kept it pure.

Re: Why, ESPN?

I applaude ESPN's decision to show Sharapova/Bondarenko on Saturday. It was a good match. Why would they show two unknowns when they could show Maria Sharapova play a 3-set match against a hot blonde with protruding nipples? As crass as that may sound, it's certainly the truth. Sharapova and Bondarenko are undeniably easy on the eyes. Sex sells, baby. Like others have said, ESPN isn't stupid.
