Indian Wells, Miami Tennis Events No Longer on ESPN

Complete Article: http://www.tennis-x.com/xblog/2008-02-08/375.php

Notable summary:
“The two Masters Series tournaments at Indian Wells and Miami are unquestionably the next best tournaments beyond the Grand Slams,” Deluca said. “But we have made a decision based on the time of the year, and the other 400 hours of tennis that we have. We love those tournaments, but for 2008 we weren’t in a position to offer them the number of hours or a deal that they could accept financially.”

Under a reported one-year deal, Fox Sports Net will televise 30 live hours from Indian Wells including the both men’s and women’s finals, plus Miami. CBS will still televise both Miami finals.

Other notable FYIs:

TV Schedule: http://www.tennisweek.com/ontv/

Fox Sports Net, which will televise the Pacific Life Open at Indian Wells as well as the Sony Ericsson Open on Key Biscayne for the first time next month, has assembled its commentary team for Indian Wells.

Veteran broadcaster Barry Tompkins will anchor the telecast as play-by-play announcer joined by analysts Justin Gimelstob and Chanda Rubin.

FSN has not yet confirmed its commentary team for the Sony Ericsson Open though it is possible it could reconvene some of its Indian Wells commentary crew for Key Biscayne.

Having Fox in tennis is great for the sport. It's new money, and they have a ton at Fox.
If David Hill decides to start competing for other Tier I's and majors, the money will flow in. Especially if they put it on the big network, not cable.

It's already a big deal that Dubai and Doha want in.
Those billionaires changed the whole sport of horse racing when they decided to buy top Kentucky bloodlines. Hundreds of millions of new money came into the thoroughbred breeding industry.

Re: Indian Wells, Miami Tennis Events No Longer on ESPN

I have a big question see I only have cable I mean I don't have any direct tv or dish channel.

So I only have Fox I mean it doesn't say Fox Sports or anything like that.

Will I be able to watch some tennis too because If I make memory I believe I did watch a Federer match (Us Open 07) in Fox channel.

Venus and Serena

It's on cable. Fox sports is everywhere in the world. It's Murdoch.

"Watching Paint Dry"
"Seaweed- In it's natural habitat"

Face reality - No stars, no ratings, no ESPN. This isn't 1970. Tennis is niche sport now. (In the USA) Who's playing who's guaranteed to get TV ratings?

All the money Sharapova makes from the big corperations I thought she was the one who is suppose to bring in the viewers because of her mass appeal. I mean thats what Larry Scott and Mary Joe Fernandez always says.

Who brings fans to tournaments, and who brings fans to TV sets, are not necessarily the same people. But the folks who sign athletes to big contracts GO to tournaments, and talk to people who GO to tournaments.

Maybe if they polled a couple thousand people playing on beatup high school tennis courts, endorsements would go to the players who the people who watch on TV want to see. (yeah, right)

I'm not surprised. I don't particularly like the announcing team, but I'm not surprised.

March is incredibly busy with basketball.
