Jankovic wants a full-time coach

Jankovic wants a full-time coach
World no.4 Jelena Jankovic admits she desperately needs the input of a top flight experienced coach if she is to move closer to the top of the world rankings.

The 23 year-old Serb has never had a proper full-time coach; she was accompanied at the recent Dubai tournament by her elder brother Marko and regularly travels with her mother Snezana.

However she has informed her management company, Octagon, that she feels the need for top flight technical input. I dont want to be alone anymore, she said. I want somebody to help me improve my game. I want to listen to somebody who has better knowledge than I do.

Jankovic looks enviously at the relationship between world no.1 Justine Henin and her coach Carlos Rodriguez. I still have a lot of room for improvement which is a good thing when I am no.4 in the world, continued the player from Belgrade. If I have the right coach who has a lot of knowledge and can raise my level by putting me on the right track, I can really reach my full potential and do great things in tennis.

I would really love to find the right coach who can help me do this but its really tough to find that person. I am looking very hard and will do my best to find someone. Last year I got to no.3 in the world with just a part-time coach and a hitting partner. Now I know I need somebody with me all the time

Re: Jankovic wants a full-time coach

I think that would really help. The only must-fix part of her game is her serve. I think her volleys could be improved, and that would help her against Henin (see Sharapova's swinging volley put aways off Henin's floaters) but the serve is a must-fix.

More than anything, a coach would help Jelena put away opponents. She has trouble closing, not because she chokes, but because her opponent steps up her game and Jelena doesn't seem to know how to stop it. She has a lot of options with her shots. Having a coach would help her figure out when to use which shots.

I think that is a very good move and it shows committment and desperation to win. This may bring her a slam IMHO.

Re: Jankovic wants a full-time coach

Excellent move ....

Ms Jankovic: a great player, reads the game superbly, appears to on a somewhat slippery slope. Unconvincing, error-strewn - apparently confused and undecided what tactics to employ when things are going against her in certain match-ups. Time-out needed to treat the annoying back and shoulder issues. And then some blood, sweat and tears on the practise court with a visionary coach. No need to over-complicate things, a different perspective is what JJ needs. Oh yeah, and a bit more beef on that serve.

Re: Jankovic wants a full-time coach

I love that she is not satisfied to be no.4 but she wants to improve her ranking and her game. That's the right attitude Jelena!
I wish her to find a good full-time coach ASAP.

She should get Jimmy Connors

Thank you for everything Mercedes, now please be nice to Socrates for me, perhaps fetch him a bird or two. We love you, always.

Re: Jankovic wants a full-time coach

Brad Gilbert will soon be available, too. Can you imagine those two clashing on the practice court?

I bet Jamie Murray would volunteer, too.

She did have a coach in Dubai (or was it Doha?) He was on a 'tryout". An American, former player, receding hairline, name escapes me.

Somehow I suspect she's going through a few 'tryouts."

Re: Jankovic wants a full-time coach

I think Brad Gilbert would be a good coach for her. Is he still working with the British tennis federation?

Re: Jankovic wants a full-time coach

Its not about the coach its about whats between the ears and chemistry between the two.Its always a good idea to have family members as coaches, they are usually there with good intentions.Does she have substantive resources to hire a good coach or is she willing to pay six figures that Murray was paying Gilbert? She should hire Myskina's coach I am sure he is looking for a job and might help her win RG.
