Indian Wells - WTA vs ATP Prize Money

When I asked about the huge difference in Memphis, a few here made it out to be a dumb question since the tiers were different. Okay, that made sense. However, the Pacific Life Open is a Tier I event for both the WTA and the ATP yet there's still a huge difference:

men - $3.589 million
women - $2.1 million

So what gives?

This is a good question ( unlike Memphis )

I may not have a good argument. But Indian Wells is not a mandatory event. For the men, it is. I could see a larger purse on this alone for the men.

Re: Indian Wells - WTA vs ATP Prize Money

the only perfectly coherent comparison one can actually make is in Miami. and what do you know? same amount of money: $7.54 million ($3.77 million for men, $3.77 million for women).

one cannot possibly expect a mandatory event to award the same amount of money as a non-mandatory one. from 2009 all this will change though. stop making these stupid threads btw! if your only desire is to reveal the inequalities between the way men and women are paid, try using an acceptable and non-biased reference point.

Lol, dumb question followed up by dumb question.

Serena. Simona. Ana. Petra. Venus.
Clijsters, Henin, Dementieva, Davenport.
Martina Hingis - "No one else played like Hingis - no one could."

If that were true, it would only be because there are so many more men than women challenging for a professional ranking. So of course the lower ranked mens players would be higher quality players than the lower ranked women players, of a comparative ranking.

Another Prize-Money-Thread from "No-discrimination-Pov"

I´m expecting every week a new thread with the following title: " [FILL IN TOURNAMENT NAME] - WTA vs. ATP Prize Money "

Tamira PASZEK
Na LI - Francesca SCHIAVONE - Roberta VINCI
Tamira's backhand, Roby's slice, Galina's dropshot

If Stepanek was on a bad day!

Re: Indian Wells - WTA vs ATP Prize Money

This is one of the tournaments that will raise prizemoney under the new roadmap.
This year, it's a good payout for the quality of field.
They are missing Justine, Venus, Serena, Anna and Lena D.
That's all 4 slams from 2007 and Anna and Lena won titles this year and last year.

The most wasted of all days is one without laughter....
Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there
Enjoy This Moment!!
HEALTH and HAPPINESS to EVERYONE

I don't think that IW will be a worst tournament just because Elena and Anna won't play there.
Justine and WS are different, they are BIG names.
