Are They Using Slower Balls?

I have noticed that Venus' and Serena's serves have been registering only 118 or 119 mph. I donot think they are serving slower, are they using different slower tennis balls? They admitted as much at Wimbledon, but is this true for the other tournies as well?

Beat'em down Ms Williams, beat'em down!

Victoria Duval - coming to a slam near you
Françoise Abanda definitely a future #1 --- Taylor Townsend devastation on the march
Venus and Serena ferocious grannies --- Kimiko Date Krumm great granny still doing her thing.

I have heard that they are trying to make everything a more similar speed. So, they're using faster balls on slow courts like clay & slower balls on the fast courts like grass.

Good luck Nathalie Dechy & Dinara Safina too!

They just started it this year. It might hurt the power girls serve some on grass, but clay will be more friendly to them as well.

If this is true and the goal is to make speeds constant why play different surfaces? I read last year they wanted to slow everything down because speeds were approaching velocities which were beyone reaction times of human beings. To me it is an exercise in futility because the inequities that exist between players will always remain. For example, if Venus can serve 125 mph and you slow down the ball. She can still serve at 116 mph. But if you can only serve 95mph and you slow down that serve. an 86mph serve is in serious danger from say Serena.

I think it might be more to counter act the mens game being so extreme & the women get it same too anyway.

That would be sad & kinda funny if some girl were stuck serving in.. say the mid 60s. I wonder what Kapros was serving at Wimby lol.

I went to the ITF website and found out that they did approve 2 additional balls for use in 2002.

1. type 1 - the surface is harder which makes it faster
2. type 2 - the standard ball
3. type 3 - is 6% larger which should reduce it's speed 12% i.e. slower

It is up to the tournament organizer to choose which ball they use.

Good jod researching TS! I had no idea the tournaments could choose. I wonder how many tournaments are using the new ones this year & who did.

it's hard to serve a bigger ball, slower speed is just for entertainment.
Some megazine pointed out, if a bigger was used in Wimbledon, then the winner would always be Agassi!
Kapros will probably be the biggest victim! LOL

Martina Hingis
