Can Meghann repeat last year's win over Venus?

I'm not really sure about it. BUt I think that if Meghann is on a very focused and precise day, and Venus hasn't got a lot of confidence as last year, she could make lots of UEs, who knows.
I personally hope it'll be a great match between the two of them, but to see new players coming up to the final would be good also.

What about you?

Can she?? why not? will she?? unlikely... Don't expect lightening to strike twice . Venus's housemate has been the only player to beat her back to back since '99 thus far :P

doubtful.
meghann's not been having a very good year, and she needs to play at the top of her game to beat Venus. Her back is feeling better though (thats what she said after Fed Cup) but I still don't think it will be enough to beat Venus.

If Meghann's back is better, sure she could but Venus is still the fav to win right now.

DANIELA HANTUCHOVA = #1

Good luck Nathalie Dechy & Dinara Safina too!

Meghann's got a big serve and forehand, can come to net, and is a good scrambler. The reason she beats Venus, Seles, Serena etc. is not because she has a better game really. She is one of many girls capable of beating the top players, but she just oozes confidence and fight when she plays. You get a sense that she just isn't afraid of the best players.

That being said, I expect Venus to recover from a set down to win 4-6 6-2 6-2. You heard it here first.

Here's their head to head

Venus Williams (USA) vs. Meghann Shaughnessy (USA)
2000-08-28 U.S. Open Hardcourt R32 Venus Williams (USA) 7-6(3) 6-1
2001-01-15 Australian Open Hardcourt R64 Venus Williams (USA) 6-3 7-6(3)
2001-04-30 Hamburg Clay F Venus Williams (USA) 6-3 6-0
2001-07-23 Stanford Hardcourt QF Meghann Shaughnessy (USA) 2-6 7-5 7-6(4)
Venus Williams (USA) leads 3:1
Hard: Venus Williams (USA) leads 2:1
Clay: Venus Williams (USA) leads 1:0

Like I said , don't expect a match like that again :P
P.S. Venus's housemate retired after twisting her ankle in that match against Meghan, so I personally won't make much of that win.

I believe she can do it but I don't think it will be at this tourney. As o0O0o said, she has a big serve and forehand but she's not consistent with her shots. At Fed Cup she tended to overhit and shots were spraying all over the place. While that was good enough to beat the Israeli doubles team, it won't be enough to beat Venus. Once Meghann can harness the power and cut down her ue's; she'll be a very formidable player!

Amélie Mauresmo, 2009 GDF Suez, 2007 Proximus Diamond Games, 2006 World No. 1 ,Wimbledon Champion, Proximus Diamond Games, Gaz, Australian Open, 2005 YEC, Advanta Chamionships, Italian Open, Proximus Diamond Games, 2004 World No. 1, Advanta Championships, Generali Linz, Rogers Cup, Italian Open, German Open, 2003 J&S Cup, Advanta Championships, 2002 Rogers AT&T Cup, Dubai Open, 2001 Gaz, Nice, Amelia Island, and Eurocard Ladies German Open, 2000 Adidas International, and 1999 Bratislava Champion

There's a fine line between love and hate; that line is called family!

No one does things exactly the way I want them to. No one ever has. It’s a problem they have!

Meghann has not beaten Serena before. An opponent retired
in the middle of a first set due to injury can't be considered a
victory by anyone under any circumstance. And her win against
Venus was a fluke.

venus lost last year right after her victory at wimbledon, so i expect a more focused and determined venus now since she lost wimby this year...i think from now till the US Open shes gonna be racking up titles to compensate for that loss at wimby...

Anything is possible, but as always I will be pulling for Venus to win. That being said, good luck to both players.

Her win against Venus was no fluke, she dictated the rallies and took it to her. Oh, and she was up 5-4 and a break against Serena, clearly playing better, so Meghann clearly had the advantage when Serena retired, thus giving Meghann the win. What's fair is fair.

Oh, I forgot, the Williams sisters have never lost a match. Something miraculous always happens.

Wait a second, yes a win is a win, but if a player gets injured during the match and has to retire I hardly call that a "normal" win and the player who wins did not beat the loser. The loser had to retire no matter if meg was up 5-0 or 5-4, players can comeback and win. It has happened before and will happen again.

serena lost that match not because meg was the better player that day, she lost because she retired. Why is that hard to understand?

However her win over Venus was legitimate. Though I doubt a repeat performance will happen.
