Flashes in the Pan

Since the start of the Open era (April 68) to date, 15 women have made a run to the SF of a major once but never it to the last 8 before or since. All of them made it past a seeded player (one thanks to a walkover) on their way to the SF.

These flash-in-the-pan moments happened 4 times in the 1970s, 4 times in the 80s, 4 times in the 1990s and three times, so far, in this current decade.

They have happened 6 times in Australia, 5 times at Roland Garros and 4 times at Wimbledon. Never, however, in the open era has a semi-finalist at the US Open not played at least a second quarter final at a major in her career.

Re: Flashes in the Pan

How did Fernandez bagel Kim. I always wondered if Kim was injured or sick that tournament or something...the match with Poutchek was also kinda . That fourth round really pisses me off too for obvious reasons. ughghghghg. Elena.

Re: Flashes in the Pan

Some of these women aren't "flashes in the pan" Like Meredith McGraph, she cared herself out a nice long career.

Re: Flashes in the Pan

You're quite right faboozadoo15, several of these women, McGrath among them, had respectable careers in spite of the fact that they only had one big run at a major. Dechy is also definitely in that category. Fernandez, Stevenson (who did make the top 20), Benjamin & Evers-Brown never won a WTA (or equivalent level, pre-WTA international circuit) tournament and I'm not sure about Werdel-Whitmeyer.

Zuluaga's run. Fabiola had some decent wins in her career though.

Re: Flashes in the Pan

Dechy was robbed of a final

I love Lindsay, but Dechy in the final would've been so cool and different!

As well as beating Molik in a close match in the quarters.

Re: Flashes in the Pan

Lindsay sure ended some of their runs abruptly, especially giving a thrashing to Stevenson! By the way, I thought this was going to be some kind of nudist thread from the title......

I feel bad for Camille Benjamin. Lost 6-0 6-0 in the biggest match of her life
