I really do think the Williams Sisters and Davenport are masking just how bad the American situation is in the Women's game. I remember twenty years ago America used to occupy at least half of the top 20 and 30 plus in the top 100. In the 70s America used have 40+ players in the top 100.
As thing stand now, I can actually visualize a day, post Williams sisters, where the US have only one or two players in the top 50 and none in the top 30. This could really happen, and if it does, heaven knows what it would do to the attention tennis receives in the States. It is a rather scarey but realistic prospect.
I suspose the WTA is looking to Asia to make up for the potential loss in US financial support and I'm sure tennis will survive but while the US isn't the centre of the universe they like to think they are, it certainly is a huge market, the loss of which no sport could afford without a great deal of suffering.
