Only two American women in AO qualifying. :help:

The future of American tennis isn't looking too bright. The only american women entered in the qualifying draw are Bethanie Mattek(who hasn't won a match in ages) and Ahsha Rolle(has a decent shot to qualify).

This might be a record for least amount of Americans in a GS qualifying draw.

Future not so bright, but on the plus side you've got Venus, Serena, Lindsay...and Ashley Harkleroad seems to be doing okay recently.

That's because Ahsha hasn't done much outside of that result.

Raquel Kops-Jones made the cut-off but it looks like she didn't want to spend all the money to go to Australia, which is a little strange seeing how she would have gotten into the main draw of doubles. I hope she's not injured.

SERENA AND VENUS WILLIAMS

DO YOU KNOW WHO YOU'RE MESSING WITH? IF IT'S A GAME, WE'RE NOT PLAYING. STAY OFF CENTRE COURT OR ELSE.

There are quite a few younger players 16 and under I think we are gonna see in the next few years. When the junior draw comes out you will see plenty of the potential talent .

Re: Only two American women in AO qualifying. :help:

Julie Ditty and Ashley Harkleroad are doing well lately, particularly Ashley. Venus, Serena, and Lindsay are fine. Shaughnessy is top 100, but she's going to be out for awhile ( ). Where's Jamea Jackson? I really like her game. Washington and Perry, no idea. Same for Haynes, but she's probably playing a 25k somewhere soon. Tu is struggling a bit, but she's still top 50/60. Ahsha needs to find some MD form, fast.

Coco Vandeweghe will be in AO qualifying next year.

I dunno, America looks a LOT better now than it did awhile ago. Seven top 100 players...it's not great, but it's enough for now.

Mashona is trying to rebound from a long injury break. She just lost in the qualies of the 25K Tampa Bay.

Re: Only two American women in AO qualifying. :help:

I really do think the Williams Sisters and Davenport are masking just how bad the American situation is in the Women's game. I remember twenty years ago America used to occupy at least half of the top 20 and 30 plus in the top 100. In the 70s America used have 40+ players in the top 100.

As thing stand now, I can actually visualize a day, post Williams sisters, where the US have only one or two players in the top 50 and none in the top 30. This could really happen, and if it does, heaven knows what it would do to the attention tennis receives in the States. It is a rather scarey but realistic prospect.

I suspose the WTA is looking to Asia to make up for the potential loss in US financial support and I'm sure tennis will survive but while the US isn't the centre of the universe they like to think they are, it certainly is a huge market, the loss of which no sport could afford without a great deal of suffering.
