Wertheim's answer to Williams not crediting past coaches
Last week you wrote that the Williams sisters had technical help from coaches besides their father, Richard. That being the case, why do they never thank them? You would think they would be gracious enough to give credit where it is due, not just to their dad.

Right on. I mean, did you catch how effusively Hewitt praised Darren Cahill after Hewitt won Wimbledon? Neither Andre Agassi nor Monica Seles can go a match without deferring credit to Nick Bollettieri for all he did for their games in their formative years. And when she finally breaks through, you can bet Kournikova will speak glowingly of her days with Eric Van Harpen. If and when Marat Safin ever wins big, we'll be bleary-eyed and late for work if we listen to him thank all of his coaches.
Bottom line: Right now the Williams sisters only have two (or one? or none?) coaches. It is hardly a breach of etiquette or evidence of a lack of humility when they neglect to thank previous tutors.
Proud to be an American
Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.
