I'm all about the Olympics, and am counting the days til they startin Athens. Here's a news-snippet that was sent to my email box:

The Athens Olympic Committee has asked GEORGE MICHAEL,
who is of Greek descent, to write a theme for the 2004 Summer Games.

The park looks pretty, and the tennis center looks very adequate!

Isn't there a big fuss over the fact its on red clay and about 2 weeks before the Open in US?

I think they will have to make major changes to that years schedual!

French Open - clay
2 week interim
Wimbledon - grass
2 week interim
Olympics - clay

I can see some players skipping Wimby...'specially the claycourt specialists that don't give themselves a chance on grass.

I think 2004's US Olympic team will be a very depleted field....even though we will send 3 candidates, I'm 90% sure none of the top 20 would go (except maybe Shaughnessy). That is if Meghann is still top 20 at that time.

Barcelona was on clay after Wimbledon in 92.

The WTA/ATP have no say on the surface, Athens decides on what surface (to favour their players). No surprise it is clay. The conditions in Athens are going to be horrible, really hot and humid.

And with it being 2 weeks after Wimbledon when I thought it was going to be more in August I think there might be a few more top players there than I originally thought.

Competition will take place within the span of eight days (August 15-22). Is it "two weeks" after Wimbledon? It is not going to be a choice between Wimbledon and Olympics, it will be a choice between US Open and Olympics.. I can see few players who'd play there instead of playing Canadian and New Haven. Anyone who'll be in hunt for Olympic gold can kiss their US Open hopes goodbye. And with US Open being the most lucrative event by far, very few would take a risk. Mostly those who dislike US hardcourts or those who are very patriotic. Perhaps Spanish and South American players, Mauresmo, Henin, Dementieva, maybe even Seles. Maybe Dokic. But I can't see The sisters or Capriati or Davenport or Hingis playing it really. It is going to be very depleted field.

If that is true, it's a really odd choice because their best player (Eleni Daniilidou) is better on grass than on clay.
