Duece

Where does the world Deuce come from and what does it actually mean?

I always thought it was french as the game originated in Paris and it sounds french.

But then I realised that I knew the french for Duece is Egalite.

So where does Duece come from and what does it mean?

Re: Duece

clearly it derives from the euphemism "dropping a deuce." deuce is when a player levels the score at 40-40... therefore one player had to have been ahead in the game. when they lose the point that brings it to deuce, the player in the lead thinks "crap" or "shit" or what have you. thusly, that point in the game was named deuce.
