Chakvetadze has psychological aide

Anna Chakvetadze, the latest woman to emerge from the Russian tennis production line, says her time as a psychology student has helped her to break into the top 10 this year.

"I studied psychology at university, although I've not yet finished. At first I thought it was boring but it got more and more interesting when I started to read the books and it definitely helps me when I'm playing," she said.

"It helps you prepare properly for the match and when I'm playing I try to think about the next point and not the last one. I also make a point of fighting all the time as it puts pressure on your opponent when they see you don't want to give them any free points.

"For me it is important not just in sport but in life in general."

Chakvetadze started the year outside the top 10, but four tour titles and a debut grand slam semi-final appearance at the U.S. Open have helped the 20-year-old to rise to number six.

Her performances earned her a place in the season-ending WTA Championships in Madrid for the first time. She fell at the semi-final stage to compatriot Maria Sharapova but showed plenty of evidence of the talent that is likely to make her a fixture in the top 10.

"It is definitely my best season but I've still got plenty of room to improve my tennis and my ranking," she said.

The Moscow-born player, who is one of six Russians in the world's top 15 and a member of the country's victorious Fed Cup team, admits she took up tennis only because she was desperate to find an excuse to give up piano lessons.

"I started with piano and I didn't like it and when I started with tennis I really liked it," she said. "One day I said to my parents I wanted to stop piano and just play tennis. I was just eight years old and I had to stop one of the two.

"My parents were playing a little bit and my mum was watching tennis on TV and she really liked it and she said 'Why don't you try tennis and if you like it you can continue it'.

"My parents never pushed me and that's good because if kids don't want to do something like that they shouldn't have to do it. My mum pushed me for piano and because I didn't like it I'm not playing right now.

"Maybe if I had started a little later I would be a good piano player but it didn't happen and I'm pleased I'm a good tennis player."

Her determination and strength of character were evident in her victory over world number three Jelena Jankovic in her final round-robin match in Madrid.

She won the first set 6-4, then lost seven games in a row to trail 1-0 in the third but hung on to clinch the decider 6-3 and book her place in the semi-finals.

One thing she believes helps her to keep her focus is the fact that she can switch off from the sport when she is not on the circuit.

"My friends who I grew up with have nothing to do with tennis," she said. "They don't know the sport and that makes things easier when I go home. We just go out and because they don't really follow the sport we can talk about anything except tennis.

"During the summer I relax and stay fit by playing soccer in the garden with my friends and my little brother who is nine. You need that sort of freedom."

Thanks for the article Demska... Chakvetadze has matured practically after every match this year. We could see this youngster become an all time great someday! She's got the desire and determination.

Re: Chakvetadze has psychological aide

She definitely possesses the psychological capacity to remain in the top 10 among these simple ball bashers for a long long time.

It's going to be fun to watch tennis 2, 3 years down the road when Radwanska and Pavlyuchenkova come of age.

Re: Chakvetadze has psychological aide

Anna has enough power to stay on the court. She needs the real power players to make some UE's.
It's like JJ, if Anna can get some key points, she can win.

Perhaps not the power of the ball bashers, but enough to make excellent passing shots! She's got herself enough punch behind the ball to get the job done, and she's still young!

The mental side of tennis has always been underrated.
She does have a advantage with her studies in that field.

Re: Chakvetadze has psychological aide

Anna in her own words -

November 25, 2007
Hi Everyone! Sorry for the long wait , I know it’s
been a while since my last entry. Well better late
than never ; ). Anyway I’m really relieved that
tennis season is over. By far this was the Best year
of my young career.! There’s been a lot of first for
me this year, First quarters in a Grand Slam, First
Semis in a Grand Slam, First time qualifying in the
Women’s Masters and reaching my First Semis there as
well and First time in my career to be in the Top Ten
and ending the year ranked World number 6. I know
there’s more to improve but I’m quiet satisfied how my
year ended : ). I look forward to 2008 season and hope
to improve my tennis : ) Okay enough with my tennis ,
Lol, Before Madrid I was able to enjoy some time off
and relaxing, I went to see Beyonce’s Concert , What
can I say? She was bootylicious and a great performer.
She really gave an amazing performance. One last
tennis note, I know all of you had known already that
my FEDCUP teammates we’re name Russian Team of the
Year and I was named Russian Player of the year.
Honestly I didn’t expect the award in fact I wasn’t
informed till the speech Ceremony. During the awards I
had the honor to sip champagne in the FEDCUP Trophy.
It was some experience and a first for me. I didn’t
get drunk by the way, For the record ; ). After the
Award’s ceremony we went to a club. I think it was
just fitting since tennis season was officially over.
I’ve read somewhere that I liked going to clubs and
party all the time. To set the record straight not
true at all and it’s just normal for a teenager like
me to unwind after a hard days work. After all I’m not
just a tennis player I’m a normal young lady who just
try to enjoy life and make the most of it.

Just to prove it. It’s been two weeks since I touched
a tennis racquet and practiced. And I haven’t been to
the gym to do fitness. Even though We had one built on
the ground floor. I feel I have to start exercising
again just to keep my body going. Well at least just
my fitness. I wont start training for about two weeks
from now. In the mean time I’m just going to take it
easy and make the most of my time off, You know what
that means? V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N! Yahoooooo, LOL. I’m just
looking forward to it, Spend time for myself, with my
family, especially my brother Roman and my friends.
I’m very fortunate to have friends who’s not really
into tennis. At least we can talk about normal things
and get to do normal stuff too ,like shopping . I
believe that it’s very important to have a balance
life. I’m a tennis player and on the other hand I’m
also a normal young lady. Clubbing isn’t all I do when
I’m not on the tour Me and my friends also enjoy going
to theaters. We just went yesterday and Tonight we
might go watch Enrique Iglesias’s concert, I’ll let
you know on my next entry if went? Anyway for the
time being I just want to enjoy my break and make the
most out of it. Before I say my Goodbyes for now I
just want to THANK ALL MY FANS AROUND THE WORLD! THANK
YOU FOR ALL THE SUPPORT AND LOVE YOU HAD SHOWN ME!
THANK YOU FOR THE FAN MAILS YOU SENT ME! I’LL TRY MY
BEST TO ANSWER BACK TO ALL YOUR REQUEST. AGAIN THANK
YOU ALL FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART! I LOOK FORWARD TO
GIVING YOU GOOD RESULTS IN THE COMING SEASON!
HOPEFULLY YOU’LL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT ME! MY FANS ARE
TRULY ONE OF THE REASONS I LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING
HARD AND ACHIEVE GOOD RESUTLS IN TENNIS AND IN LIFE!
TAKE CARE AND GOD BLESS YOU ALL!

I’ll see you all very soon!
Lots of Love

So she's a teenager still. I thought she turned 20 on March 5??

Re: Chakvetadze has psychological aide

what i don't get is why these russians are such mental midgets against sharapova

dementieva, chakvetadze...they just fall apart whenever they have to play maria...6-2 6-2 in a yec semi is a pathetic performance..and she's had plenty more of them against the top players this year...
