The 'Developmental' Tour

Tier III, IV and V tournaments.

The big girls don't get down here much. Venus did start her year down here. Monica and Jelena visit regularly. (Jelena because she'd discorporate if she took a week off. Monica because (as near as I can tell) she needs/needed the points.) But this isn't the usual realm of top ten players. It isn't even the realm of top twenty players. In 23 tournaments, the winners have only been top 20 players five times. They just don't play in tournaments this small.

Which is good. The Tier III, IV V's are almost a developmental tour. You don't go home to work on your game if you're a good player. You play Tier III's and Tier IV's while you work things out. Then go up to the big tour for more points, more exposure, more prize money and more endorsements. Look at Anna Smashnova. She's won three small tournaments this year, and got her game in shape. Now she's doing well enough in the big tournaments for a top 20 ranking. Textbook example.

One other note. They play a lot more clay down here than the big girls do. 17 out of 36 Tier III, IV and V tournaments are on clay. (16 red, 1 green.) Nearly half. Only 6 out of 31 GS, Tier I and Tier II tournaments are played on clay.

You realize there's not very many faster surface tournaments for the lower ranked players (i.e. grass and indoor)....i think that it's kind of unfair because I think players like Hopkins and Molik are just as talented as some claycourters, and the clay courters can get to ranks such as 25 just by playing in these lower tiered clay events that are not offered indoors and on grass.

Top 20 players at the time playing in these lower tiered events:
Winners in CAPS

Gold Coast

interestingly, though, if you look at it this way, in only 6 out of 11 tournaments where top 20 players entered, did they win. Raymond, Srebotnik, Svensson, Smashnova(who is now top 20), and Daniilidou won those tournaments. So, I guess at times they're not as successful as they should be in these tournaments. Although, when a top 10 player such as Williams, Dokic, or Seles enters, they generally win.

I wish more events were added in the US during the fall season....kinda like an oppossing season (like now..clay tournaments during the hard season).

It would benefit the non-claycourters that are ranked outside the top 20 tremendously.

A couple more Tier II clay tournaments would do more good than harm, IMHO.

IMO... grass is the surface that needs more tournaments...

But that might result in too many fast court tournies, so clay might be added as well I guess. But I think grass is the best surface for players... least stressful on bodies, plus, shorter matches.
