Stanford seeds

1. V. Williams
2. Davenport
3. Seles
4. Clijsters
5. Dokic
6. Henin

Rankings

2 Venus Williams
4 Monica Seles
5 Kim Clijsters
6 Jelena Dokic
7 Justine Henin
9 Lindsay Davenport

I'm not sure I get this. It's not her injury protected ranking. That would be #1, and she's seeded #2. THe player who really suffers is Dokic, who is now guaranteed a pretty tough QF match.

I think it is very fair! It's a good compromise: Lindsay was #1 before she got injured, and therefore none of the players getting bumped down are getting screwed, and although Lindsay was #1 she wasn't really an authentic #1 with no major finals, so she isn't getting screwed either.

Thsi is stupid she hasn't played since November so how can people know shes good enough to be seeded 2!

That was Monicas!

As far as I am concerned, the one who got screwed is Monica. 2nd seed is a sweet position, and she earned it.
I agree with you there, this isn't fair... I like Lindsay a lot! No doubt about that! But this isn't fair for Monica!

Sorry about the San Diego vs Stanford mistake. I'm a bit flu-ish, and Claifornia is SO far away. :) I just thought it was weird to seed her #2. If you're gonna do that, why no go all out and seed her #1?

I was under the impression that Bank of the West Classic is held at Stanford, and that the Acura event is held at San Diego (or rather, north of SD).

It´s the same probably it was with Seles years ago when she was to be unseeded returning from injury.

They seeded her 2nd behind the top seeds, no matter who is the top seed or who is the seeded player seeded behind her then.

For obvious ( hardcourt specialist ) reasons, Lindsay is most definetly a top5 hardcourt player and if they seed her in front of Monica of behind, it´s well deserved to mention her in a row with the Williams, Monica and Jenn as the best 5 hardcourt ladies in the world.

I´ve no problem seed her like that at all and she´s to be seeded 3rd behind Jenn and in front of Monica in San Diego and then we won´t have a problem either as all 4 could just meet for the semis and there is no big deal about that.

Seeding her in front of or behind Monica is a question but as they would probably meet in the semis either way, why to discuss that ;)

Monica was never given a special seed in return from an injury; only from the stabbing. And for that, she had to have special accomodations made through the then WTA president, Navratilova. This is wholly different. Seles has been in Davenport's current position, and was not given the benefits of a higher seed.

If you want to compare, compare the two similar situations of coming back from injury, not the stabbing.

Yeah, I remember in 2000 when Monica came back from a stress fracture at Scottsdale. She was ranked like 11 or something, so they left her unseeded! Before she left the top 10, she was ranked number 4.

I think it might have to do with the players' rankings when they got injured.
Monica was ranked No.1 before she got "injured" (I think the WTA tour regarded the stabbing as an "injury"), and so she was the co-No.1 with Steffi Graf in 95 and most of 1996.
Davenport was also ranked No.1 before she had the surgery, so she has a protected ranking of No.2 (am I right? Or No.3?)
Steffi Graf was ranked No.2 before she left the tour after the French Open in 1997, and that was why she had a protected ranking of No.4 (she was seeded No.4 at Wimbledon 98) for her first 5-10 tournaments, then her protected ranking "dropped" to No.8 (she was seeded No.8 for the US Open) for her next 3-5 tournaments.
But after the US Open 98, Graf no longer had the protected ranking. That's why she won in Leipzig and Philadelphia UNSEEDED after the US Open.
So, I can't say it is unfair to Monica to be seeded No.3 next week.
Probably the injury/protected seeding only apply to players ranked in the top 3 (by the time they left the tour for surgery), i.e. that is why Conchita and Mary could not get the protected seeding, since they dropped outside the top 20 by the time they had the surgery.
So, Hingis was ranked No.4-6 when she had the surgery, so, should she deserve a protected ranking/seeding???
I hope my "analysis" is accurate.

I don't get the protected ranking at all. does anyone know what the actual RULES are concerning this?

its a tough call, I do think that Seles has worked awfully hard to get where she is and a #2 ranking would have been nice. but Lindsay was #1 when she got hurt, and the hardcourts are really her best surface...

If monica is to win this tournament, she's probably going to have to beat Venus and/or Lindsay. That is no different now that she is #3 vs. #2.

Assuming that Venus and Lindsay are the two biggest threats and nobody else will beat them, the difference is:

Monica as 2 seed: Monica has to beat one of them, 50% chance she also has to beat the other

Monica as 3, Lindsay as 2: Monica has to beat both of them

Right, that's why I said she "PROBABLY has to beat both of them"

i see the difference in the two scenarios, but I guess I just think you shouldn't be that worried about her having to beat both players. If in fact you think that Monica is a better player than Linsday, then she should be able to beat her, whether she plays her in the final or semifinal.
