Dementieva retires/thigh injury article

Dementieva retires from Zurich Open with thigh injury, ending Championship hopes
10/17/2007 10:48:00 AM

ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) -Francesca Schiavone advanced to the second round of the Zurich Open after Elena Dementieva retired with an injured left thigh while trailing 4-6, 6-1, 4-2 on Wednesday.

Dementieva's withdrawal ended any chance the Russian had of qualifying for the season-ending WTA Championship in Madrid, Spain.

On Tuesday, sixth-seeded Serena Williams retired with a sore right thigh during her first-round match against Patty Schnyder of Switzerland.

Dementieva defeated Williams in the final of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow on Sunday.
``Obviously, I'm very disappointed about the result of the match and disappointed also that I couldn't have made it to Madrid,'' Dementieva said. ``But I'm still very happy about the tournament last week.''
Justine Henin, Jelena Jankovic, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Ana Ivanovic and Williams have qualified for the WTA Championships, scheduled for Nov. 6-11. Five other players are still eligible for the remaining three spots.

In second-round action, Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli downed Michaella Krajicek 6-4, 6-1.

I think she shouldn't play Zurich. Finnishing season with a title would be better but still i hope she recovers soon

Exclamation Re: Dementieva retires/thigh injury article

Realistically, only four players have a shot at the final two spots and they are:

Venus
Maria
Daniela
Marion

Venus' spot is all but assured becuse Marion would have to go on some tear to unseed Venus and Maria. Even if she wins Zurich (which I don't think she will), she will still be behind Venus by 51 points, which means she would have to play Linz or Quebec. Plus Venus could add one of these tournaments if she feels Daniela and Marion are too close behind her.

Good Luck In 2012 To The Following:
Venus Williams
Serena Williams
Vania King, Sloane Stephens
Michael Joseph Jackson|1958-2009|RIP King of Music

Whitney Elizabeth Houston|1963-2012|RIP Queen of Music

Re: Dementieva retires/thigh injury article

I guess her thigh really was bothering her, but she definitely shouldn't have played Zurich. Oh well.

41-18, her best ratio out of any of her seasons.

Venus and Daniela better qualify.
