Vince Lombardi said that. Probably the most profound thing ever said about sports in general. (I will entertain other candidates for 'sports-phrase-of-the-universe'. )

He was, of course, talking about PLAYING sports, not being a spectator. Also, Lombardi didn't consider apparent-victory-by-cheating a form of 'winning', so we can put that aside.

Pretty extreme philosophy, in a way.

Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.
